Howdy to my fellow Dawg friends!
Haven't posted in a long while but I still read here religiously because this is the BEST UGA web-site on the planet! My thoughts on the UGA Football program right NOW (if you have some downtime, please continue to read my rant below):
WE are definitely heading in the right direction! UGA seems to have earned quite a bit more respect around the rest of the Southeast & to a lesser extent, nationwide with our close loss to Ala-damn-bama in the SECCG. I would've obviously rather had the SEC trophy residing in Athens along with a crystal football on the shelf beside it but hey, a close loss to the elephants tells me that we are nearing the summit & hopefully we can reach the mountain top in 2013.
Love the changes (all of them) to our coaching staff the past 3-4 yrs. although I hated to lose Belin. Still, he left on his own accord which is much better than having to show inept coaches the door like we saw several years earlier. Personally, although many in Bulldog nation & some of the respected members here have openly "given up" (or maybe the better term is "lowered expectations") on Coach Richt leading us to the promised land, I have not...or at least not yet. Is he the greatest game manager or motivator walking the sidelines today? Probably not. However, I still believe he is good enough recruiter & has recently surrounded himself with a capable enough staff to get the job done.
CMR's comments about the O-line not necessarily needing to be dominant put me off a bit I'll readily admit, but in retrospect, I do believe the point he was trying to make was that it does NOT take 3 NFL 1st or 2nd rounder's on the O-line to win at the highest level & if you look at all of the BCS champs since the bowl format was changed, I would have to imagine that he is 100% correct. Bama's 2012 O-line was the exception I suspect, not the norm. Still, does a dominating O-line help provide W's? Of course it does. Do I think UGA has recruited O-line talent adequately in the CMR tenure? I sure as hell do NOT! That said, I do not think that CMR is clueless as to the tremendous value of a skilled & cohesive O-line provides to a football TEAM. I just feel he has done a poor job of showing it in his recruiting efforts of the big nasties let alone the performance we have seen from our O-linemen on the field. Exit Coach Searels enter Coach Friend, does anybody here regret that move? I certainly do not. Regardless, bottom line on this topic for me...O-line recruiting & ability is my single biggest area of concern for our program right NOW.
Other positives I am noticing about OUR program is the building up of depth at multiple positions across the board (even the OL, though the skill level of that depth is very questionable at this point). At UGA, QB, RB, & TE positions are hardly ever a problem, nuff said. I have seen a tremendous improvement in the quality of play & ability from our WR corps for several years now & fully expect that trend to continue w/our prolific Pro-style offense (Thank you AJ Green & MoMass for setting the new standard). Watch out for 1 Malcolm Mitchell this year folks; he is going to explode as a big-time playmaker w/nothing but pass catching to focus on all Spring & Summer!
As for the Defensive side of the ball, where championships are still won, I am really liking what I am seeing here recently. CTG is really getting after HIS type of players in the defensive front 7 which will definitely pay dividends both near & long term as long as we can keep him in Athens. As for the back end of the D, I used to worry like heck about teams picking our soft-Willie secondary apart. With Coach Lakatos on board now, I don't sweat the acumen of our defensive backfield at all. I'm telling you guys & gals (where did ALL the ladies go that used to post here I wonder? Miss UGA you are missed by myself & many others I am sure) we are 1 big hitting safety away (enter Tray Matthews) from having the feared & ferocious Red & Black secondary that wreaked havoc much to my delight back in the VanGorder days early in CMR's tenure.
Special teams is an area where I STILL see plenty of room for progress but aside from a very shaky (ok, let's call it gut-wrenching) kicking game last season, kickoff & punt coverage was MUCH, MUCH better than it was in the previous 3-4 years. Not sure who to credit for this improvement (Coach O perhaps) but hopefully that trend will continue into 2013 & beyond.
Lastly, & this is of no minor significance, I am EXTREMELY pleased to have not seen any Georgia football players in the arrest logs in quite some time now. I truly hope this is a sign of more accountability being preached by the coaching staff & more responsibility & leadership becoming a point of emphasis in the locker room among the 85 brothers in Red & Black. My hopes are that we are truly becoming a close knit TEAM & that all the Dawgies are doing their best to represent the "G" with humility & with pride!
In closing, I really felt like last year we had a football team capable of making something special happen & we were only a heartbreaking 5 yards away from turning my hopes & feelings into a reality. All I can say is that this year, I feel even more confident about what's in store for our beloved Georgia Bulldogs football TEAM in 2013! I can't say much more right now but I REALLY like what we have returning on Offense (Sr. QB, monster RBs, seasoned O-line w/more than 2 backups on the bench, 2 capable TEs, very DEEP WR corp), & I am cautiously optimistic about our young & HUNGRY (this along with ability is the key) defense coming off a disapointing 2012 campaign. No predictions from me just yet but let's just say I am keeping my early New Year's schedule open for a reason
Til next time-HUNKER DOWN YOU HAIRY DAWGS!!!
