Georgia Foundation Laid

growl, conjecture on my part.

I do know that Garner had his "favorites" on the defensive line. Also believe that the animosity that RG was feeling had a lot to do with the defensive line play. I back that up with this thought . . . . when a player went down, seems the "next man up" seemed to work well. As you say, there was help a few yards away.

Garner over the years at Georgia had some outstanding young men move on to the NFL. My take on that is this, same players could have played almost anywhere and the results would have been the same. Many young men come to Georgia and other universities with "talent". It is the old coach them up ability that takes that talent and molds them a certain way.

Something that still sticks out in my mind is how quickly Garner departed Georgia after Grantham's arrival. Personally, think that the 3/4 often gives up more running yardage than the 4/3. That is based solely on running what I would call a straight 3/4. I believe that Garner was a lot like many of the high school athletes that choose a university that runs a 4 man front versus the 3 man. All or most of us are creatures of habit, I truly believe that Garner was having a hard time not lining up in a 4 man front exclusively. That actually is not a put down on Garner. He was not comfortable with the defensive line changes. He at one point had to "go to school" just as the football players did. All 3 man fronts are not run the same way.

Year after year, prior coaches came to work and there were no noticeable changes. There was a lot of talk along those lines on this board about the offensive side. That includes me along with some very knowledgeable posters on this board.

One more thing about Grantham's 3 man front. If we look at the tape on all of the games played, especially the 2012 Season, one would think that we were in a 4 man front a high percentage of the time, when actually we were not. Offensive coordinator on the bad guys side has to call the plays according to what he "thinks" he sees on the field. Tendencies are harder to read in a 3 man front.

Takes me to this . . . . that is why AM is so valuable to our team, he has his reads down and is an extension of his offensive coordinator on the field. Hard to beat experience.

If Garner had been in a 4 man front exclusively, 4 men with their hands in the dirt, he would have been much happier. Defensive coordinator came to town and said this is the way I am going to run this defense, and has done just that. If I were in Garner's shoes, especially with his background in teaching defensive fronts, think I would have to find a place that I could be comfortable along with making more money. Nothing wrong with that. Won't go into the other, that does bother me.

Maybe having a new defensive line coach will tighten up some things that looked pretty awful last year for a team that had a lot of wins and were within one play of kicking Notre Dames behind.

Players are back, show time.

Interesting quote from AM about his trip to Oklahoma over the Spring Break. Murray is a football junkie. :)

Speaking of Murray, the time he spent in Norman, Okla., this past week was extremely useful. Upon his return to Athens this past Friday, he tweeted , “Probably one of the most productive weeks in my life when it comes to getting better.

AM getting better should make some of our opponents stop and think. Like it. :)

Guess myself and others can come to this and other sites and chirp about what might be. Different story when some of the same words come out of the players mouths. If you have not seen the article below, might want to read what Jordan has to say.

Last statement that Jordan made . . . .
“You’re going to see a whole new identity of Georgia football.”

This thread titled Georgia Foundation Laid could not be more appropriate at this time, especially after reading the article below. Often refer to myself as old fart, which is true. Mrs. Whitehead was the person that sold me my first season tickets to watch Georgia football. She was an incredible lady that always put our University of Georgia and the many fans and alumni that supported the program ahead of all else. Rest In Peace Virginia Whitehead.

Read an article two days ago that caught my attention. Went back today to go over what James DeLoach had to say in an interview by David Ching (have always liked DC's articles on UGA football).

"The guys that we've got coming in, they can move and they can run," DeLoach said, referring to early enrollees Mayes and Atkins, "so, yeah, we'll probably be a little bit smaller compared to John Jenkins and Kwame Geathers, but we'll be able to move and we'll be quicker."

Might be that I will get shot out of the saddle, but Brothers, I really like what I see happening on the defensive side of the ball.

Keep saying it, but we are soooooo much better on the defensive side than I can remember, going back a few years or many years. I keep using the word depth, that means more to me than shuffling through the bull spit that I have heard since the National Championship in the 80's.

Put it this way . . . . is there anyone on this board that thinks that South Carolina will beat up on this 2013 defense, the way they did on the 2012 defense? That is getting down to where we think we are at, rubber meets the road or something like that. Under the fourth year of serious changes being made in Athens, it would be hard for anyone to tell me that we are not better. Change that statement . . . . would be hard for me to accept someone saying that to me.

Yes, I know that we came close last year. I also know that we are on solid footing with the coaches that we have right now. There is more stability in Athens than I have seen since . . . . ? Fill in the blank.

Willie is gone, along with a lot of others. BVG, don't know where he is now. There were many on this board and others that wanted BVG back. Understand that, makes me wonder why he has had so many coaching changes since he departed Athens.

Willie's approach speaks for itself. Don't know if Willie's degree was in "Basket Weaving" . . . . however if that was his major, he should apply that. He sure as heck is not and was not coaching material for D1 football in the SEC.

South Carolina 35
Georgia 7

Just how good was our defense last year? Played the game as individuals, that is the reason players on the 2012 defense were called out by two defensive teammates.

Chris Wilson, I really hope that you are suited to the Red and Black. Never been a question of talent in Athens, unless we get into "coaching talent".

Posting a link that I think many of you will enjoy. Videos have more depth than most get to see on our usual sites. If this is your first time watching these videos . . . . what do you think. The word that keeps popping up is competition and SPEED. Who knows, this group might have some fun this season. Enjoy . . . . :)
