Imo....why wouldn't you run the 4-3 against a traditional, pro style offense that runs "downhill" like a BAMA/LSU/UF (now)....
and the 3-4 against any form of spread offense....like a Texas A&M/Ark/AU?
That make more sense to me.
Guess I'm too stupid to know that answer.
I don't know either, but after seeing you say that I wondered something....
3-4 is complicated for run responsibilities because the 4 LB's have to read the play, and
they have to read the 3 DL in front of them as well. Maybe with all the variations in the
3-4, he thinks working in some 4-3 looks might just be too much for the players to handle?
Don't know... just throwing that out as a wild guess..
Buc.. no.. had my fill of 3 yards and a cloud of dust a long time ago.. I love the explosive/big play capability we have.. Just remember a few times when the D was ineffective and the O didn't help them because they 3 and outed without running any
clock.
I'm with you... just hope 2013 team can come together and do whatever it takes. What
was it Al Davis said? "Just win, baby"
Read this post late yesterday afternoon, then went to a very good friends 100th birthday celebration on the beachside. Could not get the above comments out of my head, so just like you guys, wanted answers. Stayed up well past my bedtime last night, actually into the early morning. Enough of that.
Pulled up the game film from the Auburn, Alabama and . . . . South Carolina face offs. Did not watch all of the games, did not have to with the AU game, that was over before it began.
Lots of conversation here and elsewhere about the 3 and 4 man fronts.
Now I am not going to go into long detail unless after this post is up and read by some that may not know the difference between 1 and 2 man gaps. Will be long enough without doing that.
Actually begins with South Carolina. They totally exploited our defensive front. Hang on, we had a couple of folks that lined up in the different gap situations and did not react as they had been taught. Believe me, or not, Jenkins spent the night trying to get to the quarterback, make splash plays, not holding down or making an effort to embrace "team play". He would line up in a two gap front and make believe it was one gap. Did the same thing when he was in a one gap, but got his butt handed to him more than once because he was out of position and quite frankly beaten by on offensive lineman. Kwame did some of the same, he was however a little better when in the two gap defense.
After looking at the South Carolina tape, pulled up the Alabama game. Really very simple. All anyone would have to do is put South Carolina jerseys on the Alabama players and watch Alabama do the same thing that South Carolina did. More so in the second half. Yes, some of the players were tired, but one thing is for sure, Jenkins and Kwame did not play their position as it was taught. Do I believe that some thoughts of the NFL and draft day were in the head of Jenkins even before South Carolina, sure do, and can prove it by watching his play, not what he was supposed to do ontoo many occasions.
Wartdawg, you made a very good linebacker statement above. There was confusion, much like what I witnessed in the Nebraska game. If Alec Ogletree had not played in the South Carolina game, they could have beaten us like Alabama did when we were wearing the black jerseys. Difference there, Saban called the troops off. SS never took his foot off of the throttle.
There is no way that Todd Grantham has not seen the same thing looking at tape. Hoping that the new pups come in and play team ball. There are reasons that each position is called a by a certain name, therein is where practice habits have to be followed on Saturdays.
walyton, you are right about us being in a four man front on some occasions, the main thing that I saw when we had five men on the line, no one actually had their hand in the dirt. All part of the guessing game, critical time for EVERYONE to play position football.
Sorry for the length, hope I made a point or two, if not . . . . what the heck. If anyone wants me to put the Auburn, Alabama, South Carolina videos here, let me know. You be the judge after watching the film. Don't take this as being ugly . . . . don't believe that many following football know or understand the one gap or two gap 3 man fronts. Like those of you that do, explains a lot of what should be going on in this defense.
