From Athens - Bowl Chatter

Good Morning all,

Some chatter from our bowl game.

Pulled this off another site and it kinda makes some sense to me.

“Since when did giving up 239 rushing yards become devastating? for that matter, what’s particularly wrong with a 299 yd average in the last 4 games?

2 of those games were blowouts in our favor. One more was settled long before the end. And the other came down to the last second of the game.

What team in the country was good at run defense and pass defense, both. And what conference did they play in.

Hell, give me a D that holds the other team to fewer points than my O, and I’m pretty sure nobody
beats my team “. . . True That.

Adding my two cents to the subject if you get to wrapped up in numbers looking at the SECCG and all the yards Bama rolled up on us the score should have been a blowout rather than the four points.

We bowed up and kept them out of them end zone much like we did with the Huskers

Is this ideal maybe not but the “D” did bail; the “O” several games…..

Buc and others here have made a valid observation about how our “D” looked lost with no clue and CTG was spinning his wheels in the third quarter and questioned if he is the guy to follow leading our defense going forward.

This is not a blanket endorsement of CTG by me however, trying to be fair and balanced like Fox News this would be the same defense that flipped the game in the fourth quarter.

Fumble and a Pick -Husker’s went back to back 3 and outs- Tree went off the chain much like JJ in the Florida game,

Some credit to CTG for moving Tree to LB. It will put a ton of NFL cash in this young man’s pocket.

No question CTG is still learning about college football and being a DC rather than a line coach in the NFL

I wrote here early this year that this was a make or break year for CMB. Some say it is CMR who pulls the strings on his puppet OC.

IMO that is not the case. Credit to CMB and his “O”

After I jumped off the cliff following the USC game as many others did and I wanted any and all fired from our football program bar none .

Today I am looking to reserve judgment until after our home game with LSU.

Muschimp and the Gator’s the gift that keeps on giving.

Hated to see a SEC team lose but I am sure the Dawgs in Fla will enjoy this off season and won’t miss any opportunity to give aGo Dawgs Sic’m Woof Woof Woof to the people in urange.

Savor the moment it went by way to fast

Pause and give thanks

Have a great weekend and a safe week

As always “Go Dawgs”

Go Dawgs!

yankeedawg1, read the same quote that you referred to above. Makes sense and basically it comes down to one thing, the win.

I think one of the more interesting points that I often hear and read are the reasons behind the SEC being the "lofty" conference in college football.

I have my own thoughts and it basically comes down to the supporters of Georgia and SEC football. We are never quite satisfied with the total product, even though we stand ready to defend our team and the SEC as a whole.

Said this a few years back on this board, sticks with me still. I forget things quicker in my latter years, but not this little ditty that my Mother passed along to me as a youngster, and in truth never let me forget.

"Good, Better, Best, never let it rest, until the Good is Better and the Better is Best."

That in my opinion is why coaches like Bear Bryant and Nick Saban reached the goals that many can only dream of. One of the clips being shown on television now is Saban slapping McCarron on the butt during a game. Same as a parent would do back in the day to get ones attention and demand improvement.

On the subject of TG. I liked his reaction to the incident in Vanderbilt. That however does not have to be replayed over and over. Made most of us feel good that we had a stand up guy on the sidelines. Said more than once that I think TG had a huge effect on Mark Richt, I believe that. It was needed. We also need to keep in our memory bank that Grantham was the defensive coordinator in Cleveland. Of course not much has worked in Cleveland for a long time, as was the case with Grantham.

I am glad that Grantham left Dallas and took up residence in Athens. I for one think he had a lot to do with helping us climb out of a huge hole. At that point not only was Willie on the way out, but Mark Richt was truly on the "hot seat". As AM said later on after the dust had setteled . . . . "we were aware of what the fans were thinking and saying".

Guess what I am trying to say is this . . . . we saw Mark Richt change, attitude for the most part, remember 680 smart butts comments and Richt was ready to duke it out. I sincerely hope that we can see some of that in Todd Grantham, (attitude adjustment) hoping his ego is not too large to as you say yankeedawg1, catch on to the way the college game is played.

Don't have to say a word to my Florida friends, just :) :) :)

Sorry to be so long, just have stronger feelings that some I guess. Maybe I am a bit like Todd Grantham. . . .

Special time of the year for me. Look forward to the incoming recruits. Think that there are several surprises headed our way if those I speak with have a clue.

God bless our Wounded Warriors in many of the Veterans Hospitals . . . .:)

YD1 and Buc, very good thoughts. I have kept quiet about what I witnessed on Tuesday. Alway happy to end the year with a win. Very disappointed in some things that I saw, but again, a win is a win. Not only was it a win, it was a 2 TD win.

Have been thinking a lot about the defense the last couple of days. I was not very happy with what I saw, but I am also going to give Neb. some credit. They have a very solid running game. I believe it was in the top 5 in the country. Also, believe it was the first time that we have faced a read option with a qb as fast as Martinez. Neb. had some pretty nice players as well. My main frustration was the blown assignments and getting personel on and off the field. They bowed their necks when they had too so good on them.

Probably going to take some heat for this, but I agree with McGarity's assessment of the Society of the Miserable. We beat Neb., a ranked team, by 2 TD's. Believe some forget that other colleges practice, game plan, watch film, etc., and have good players too. They plan on making plays too.

Buc, you made a statement in another thread about Tree being the best LB on team. Not taking any credit away from JJ because he too is a great player, but I am onboard with that comment. Tree is a very special talent.

GO DAWGS. Finished with a good taste heading into the offseason. Keep building. Now the target is one our chest.

I'm not going to buy into any

“Since when did giving up 239 rushing yards become devastating? for that matter, what’s particularly wrong with a 299 yd average in the last 4 games?

2 of those games were blowouts in our favor. One more was settled long before the end. And the other came down to the last second of the game."

Our inability to even remotely stop the run this season was a huge part of our 2 losses.
Huge.

"Hell, give me a D that holds the other team to fewer points than my O
, and I’m pretty sure nobody beats my team “. . . True That.

Yeah true that... but there were two games when our D didn't do that, and it cost us a
shot at a NC and the SEC crown.

This team should have finished much better than 28th in the nation on D. Sorry, I'm not going to back off of that statement.

77th in the nation against the rush. 77th

God Bless and Go Dawgs

Wart no way that I am going to try and sway your mind however, peeling the onion just a bit more you can make the case that it was also our pass defense that cost us the SECCG
and a shot at the NC.

USC loss was both a "D" and "O" meltdown

Sharing from another site that when our "D" played as a team we were lights out, playing as future NFL draft picks we tend to stink it up.

Having said all that you are spot on that we needed to have been better than 28th.

On to a monster 2013 signing class "Go Dawgs"

Go Dawgs!

Interesting conversations about our D (or lack thereof....sometimes). After reading the comments, the first thought that came to me was UF......hmmm, one of THE best D's in the country and look what UL did to them. Tells me you need all 3 phases of the game......their offense is awful and it cost them.

I'm not happy with some things I witnessed this year from our D but neither side of the ball is going to be perfect, the key in my mind is they compliment each other. Our offense won a few when the D failed somewhat and the D bailed us out a few games as well. Hard to play well and to your potential EVERY week.

USC was just "one of those days".....happens in any/every sport.

BAMA is just better.

yd1...great post to start the New Year.....looking forward to 2013 with this forum, the Dawgs and friendships.
