Next year will be even tougher. Our D has a loooong way to go.
Had to sleep on what I saw in Orlando.
Todd Grantham, the same coach that I thought had it going on, changed my mind.
Pathetic is the word that comes to my mind after watching our defense play the same way they did when Willie was the "supposed" leader. Total confusion and it was not only the beginning of the second half, happened throughout the game. Grantham acting like a madman on the sidelines, not getting through to the players on the field. Watched Mark Richt on the 40 yard line collar Grantham and jerk him around. There comes a time when reality sets in, think that has happened with the teachings of Grantham.
Don't get me wrong, the players wanted to stop what was going on, but they did not have a clue, not only the second half, the entire game. Goes back to ego in my way of thinking. Grantham changed the defensive side of the ball and in my opinion he has had enough time and ATHLETES to make his 3/4 work. If we played Alabama tomorrow, they would double the figures in the running game that they put on us in Atlanta.
Grantham said he had to have a big nose guard. Well, he not only got a big nose guard, he had two. In my opinion what has happened on the defensive side I mentioned in the previous paragraph, he refuses to believe that his way is not the right way. All I have to do is look at the numbers over our winning season, and say this . . . . Grantham should thank his lucky stars that Mike Bobo bailed his butt out several times. Sad day when a coach has stats pile up on him and refuses to make changes for the betterment of the entire team. Sorry folks, I see a huge problem with Grantham and his unwillingness to move away from his teachings that don't work. If we are looking to play at a higher level the truth is the path we are on now won't get us there.
When I look at the talent that Grantham had on his side of the ball, look at game to game accomplishments, or lack of, it ain't the players. Watching the game could not believe the confusion and the antics of our defensive coordinator. Two time outs as TampaDawg points out in another thread beginning the second half. Why? Because Grantham was lost.
This game was won because of the talent that exists in Athens. High fives to the players. If the young men were not so talented and able to overcome the lack of coaching, our team would not be 12-2 this season. That is a fact.
I do not apologize for what I have said, could say a lot more and might. Any team with good not excellent running backs and a decent offensive line will dominate Grantham's 3/4. Think maybe he is a defensive line coach, not a defensive coordinator. Seems when Grantham has had more than a couple of years in a job, he moves on. Maybe I am wrong, do know that I saw total confusion for four (4) quarters under TG's lack of leadership, or maybe his coaching methods. Not for me to decide, will support the Red and Black as long as I can draw another breath.
Good on the players that stood up and made plays. Sure hate to see Tree leaving, in my opinion, the best linebacker on the team. Good luck in the pros, you will do well.
