2012 Schedule -- Feed Back

Buc I agree, as far as everything in black and white. What I mean, you look at everything on paper, we are a shoe in for 12-0 season. For me I look at our coaching staff, and as I stated on other threads, I am not impressed with our offensive side of the ball. I feel UGA has a tendency to go backwards when we have a good season. I don't really call last year a good season other than us winning 10 games, but losing to every ranked team. If you will remember, I was on the doom and glom bandwagon last year with the show me stage. I guess, I don't want to get so hyped up thinking we are a great team and going to have great things happen to us and just slip up against Misz, USC, Fla Tenn ect.

I am excited about all the running backs we have and maybe they will be able to break tackles and get yardage on their own with out an experienced OL blocking. I also realize that we have AM and great group of receivers, but didn't we have them last year, and we still wasn't able to beat a top 20 team. I don't think it matters how many great players you have, if they are not given to tools then what good does it do.

What I mean, is that if our offensive play calling does not expand beyond the basic 4 to 5 plays we run year in and year out, nothing is going to change.

Matt Jones, 6'3"/225. Really wanted Matt to attend UGA, we were close, kind of like dancing and horse shoes. If you have watched Brandon Jacobs of the New York Giants run, Matt is the same type back with more speed. Also can be compared to Lattimore when talking strength. Florida picked up a winner from the Tampa area in Matt. Muschamp also brought Brent Pease in from Boise State, he understands offensive football, pro style. Reason for concern. Just saying . . .

Buc, I certainly hear ya....ML at 85% is still the best back in the SEC, guess we'll see how he has recovered. Hope I'm right that he IS only 85% though.

At UF, Pease is definitely going to turn around that offense but I just think that this year will be on the learning curve for them and the QB's on campus have a lot to learn. Guess we'll see how fast he gets them on track as well.

Fun to see.....can't wait.

The thing that has caught my eye with what Muschamp is doing is the building process. Don't like the fact that it is Florida and Muschamp, but he is building his team from the interior out. Anyone that follows college football closely knows that the talent available in Florida is actually incredible. Surf boards have been replaced with footballs since Spurrier came and left. Hate to say it again, but Spurrier left a huge footprint and Jeremy Foley recognized it and has continued moving forward.

There was a slip, not all was peaches and cream, Urban Meyer used this area to improve on his resume. Meyer had lost control of the program to the point that not leaving would have him being labeled as damaged goods in another year or two. Urban conveniently left when he recognized that the SEC had figured him out.

I also believe that a light finally went on with Mark Richt. When you have a season with ten wins and fans still have questions, one has to take a long hard look at the existing process.

By all accounts we have the defense to stand toe to toe with anyone on our schedule. The M&M men actually have a lot staring them in the face this upcoming season. When you are supposed to win just puts added pressure on those running the program. Any team can and will slip, but it usually does not come down to a single slip, it comes down to slips. 10/4 would not be too impressive with all of the buildup coming from outside sources and where they think this team should finish.

Some might not know, however Pease has coached in the SEC before. Coached at Kentucky, turned that offense around much like Grantham did UGA's defense. Coach at Boise State saw the talent and was quick to hire Pease. Appears to me that this move by Pease follows along the lines of Urban Meyer picking up and moving to Florida. Talented coach with a lot of talented players, year after year. Pease has a chance to see to his stock rise incredibly quick at this stop. Happened to an offensive coach under Meyer that now is head coach at Mississipp State. Must say this . . . Meyer lost his offensive coach and the program began to fall apart at the seams.

We must get on a winning track, play football against some of the powers in our conference and show these young pups in the State of Georgia that Athens is a wonderful place to be on a Saturday afternoon, leads to the NFL for many. Build that fence, too many top flight players are leaving for one reason or another. The one that I hear and read most is . . . going to a winning team with a chance at the MNC. Can't blame the young men for that.

Recently I have said a lot about the upcoming season and the ball flying all over the lot. Others seem to think along the same line.

Allow me this. When I look at some of the press conferences or just tape on coach speak, Coach Grantham calls it about as clearly as can be stated. He said that the one thing that the defense has to do is get after the quarterback. Coming from the NFL to Athens, he knows that one or two extra seconds can ruin a Saturday afternoon. Remember Arkansas in Athens.

Many times we put the blame on the defensive backfield in these situations. Repeating myself . . . . goes back to what Coach Grantham has said more than once, we have to get pressure on the quarterback. Some of these quarterbacks and receivers are living for that extra second or two, that is the reason many times the defensive backs get beaten. For example, AJ, and others, the list is very long, will separate 9 times out of 10 with that 1 or 2 second gap. Watching Mitchell in a foot race with Marshall, Mitchell is impossible to cover with the extra time. Mitchell can do a lot of different things in 1 or 2 seconds.

I can appreciate the fact that our defensive coordinator makes no bones about putting the heat on the opposing quarterback. Beautiful thing about some of his schemes, where the heat is coming from is not known. Must say this, we were in the 4/3 more than once last season, Grantham still brought heat in passing situations. It has become very apparent that Grantham/Olivadatti really like coaching the linebackers. Hard for a front four alone getting to the quarterback too often.

Another quote from Grantham that I liked at the beginning of his stay in Athens when discussing linebackers . . . . He believes that a true linebacker should be able to play any of the linebacking positions. That serves these young pups well in their pursuit of the NFL. Whether 4/3 or 3/4 they are ready for the next level. Have never really added up how many of the NFL teams run a 4/3 or 3/4, but will guess it to be close to equal.

Another good reason to bring a coach in from the NFL to the Athens campus, say it again, takes college football up a step or two, sure glad that Coach Grantham is our defensive coordinator, have witnessed our defense moving up a couple of steps from years past.

One more comment. I would really love to see the stars align in our favor and if for some reason Hines Ward decides to hang his cleats up, we have him on campus at that very moment.

Go Dawgs, build that depth and coach'em up . . . :)
