UGA Football . . . An Opinion

UGA Football . . . An Opinion was created by Buc
Took another look at UGA Spring Football Game. This is the third or fourth time on ESPN3, watched different positions and came up with something like this.

Ben Jones face up with Kwame Gaithers. This was a damn battle. Jones does not bow to anyone, love his hardnosed play, from the snap until the whistle blows. Ben Jones won when he was playing smart football, call it time in grade. Kwame Gaithers was too much for Ben on the power level. Kwame Gaithers is not the football player that played high school football in South Carolina. He was not the same football player that was taking up space on the pines last season at UGA. Kwame Gaithers is a force, demands for someone other than the center or guard taking him on individually, can’t be done. What Kwame's defensive coaches are going to do is teach the young man how to read. Ben got under Kwame’s pads a time or two, then something surprising happened, Kwame Gaithers put an end to that. Kwame Gaithers is more than a big body, he changed some things he was doing quickly, whether from the coaches or understanding what was happening himself. Kwame is a force, and will be respected from game one on.

Hutson Mason, no doubt in my mind that he will back AM up. Hutson has applied himself and it appears to me that Christian LeMay will redshirt. Nothing wrong with that, if I am Christian, gives me the same look/see that AM had. Nothing to be ashamed of, it will only make his stock go up as did AM’s. Hutson Mason signed as a UGA player caught me off guard at the start. He had big numbers in high school, was not however being chased by a lot of elite schools. The “elite schools” made a huge mistake with Hutson, he is way the hell above average. We will see, put my poker chips in the pot on this one. Hutson can and will play, backs AM up this year and gets some playing time if the powers that be are dialed in. With the talent around Hutson, he won’t need AM type “wheels”.

Chase Vasser #33. UGA loaded with linebackers, agree with that, and one of the linebackers is Chase Vasser. We don’t hear much, but Chase did not sign with UGA to watch. This season without a doubt, he will be head hunting whether on the special team list or getting playing time. Hard nosed player looking for someone to hit, not blessed with the same talent that AO is, but he damn sure is not chicken liver. He will make some noise somewhere this year, special teams or wherever.

Derrick Lott. No way they are keeping this young man off of the field. Totally impressed with him, quickness, strength and appears to be super motivated. Outstanding athlete that I think is on a mission. This young man could start for many D1 football teams. Grantham will have him on the field more and more as the year progresses. Might even start before the end of the year, I think he is a player with a tremendous upside.

Could add others, this is a start. Coach JT has done much in a short period of time. It will be worth looking at many, maybe most of these players that spend the summer months with CJT. Not only will he tighten their bodies, he will get into their heads, has proven that in the short time that he has been in charge. Whether it was Richt or McGarity, don’t really care, someone made a good decision in the S&C area. Think most of us know who was responsible for the shift in policy.

There has to be someone on this team that you folks like, and reasons why. Football talk is going to be slow for a while, pitch in with players and opinions. Lots of special athletes not mentioned in this post.

Great read Buc, I remember that when CJT was named there was a few of us that kinda went,Huh? was this the same program with just a new face leading it ? Heard noise about lack of forward looking knowledge about S & C, not on board with the new wizz bang programns and equipment.

Well as I have stated before this to me was the best move CMR had done since giving WM his walking papers. CJT- or Father Joe knows Bulldog football and the pains of losing. Word off campus is there is no slack in the chain for the players this summer. The work goes on..love it.

Buc, great read, and good info. And easy to follow, since you used the players names, as opposed to just their initials. Some posts are hard to follow when posters talk about several players and only use their initials--have to flip back and forth through the roster to see who they're talking about!!

Anyway, I still think LeMay will make a difference here, be it this year or next. I kind of figured this year, but I didn't watch any of the spring game, and I did read a quote from Coach Richt saying that his skills are there, he just isn't familiar enough with the playbook. Understandable.

The SMART era CONTINUES!!!!!!

yankeedawg1, remember well you making the statement about WM moving on. From all indications, WM and some others did not appear to understand that they were coaching in the SEC. Still wonder where this program might be if McGarity had remained at UF.

Nice piece in the media about Drew and Charlie Daniels getting together in Valdosta. Two quality men enjoying each others company. I sure hope that Drew comes to Athens and can fulfill even half of what has been said about him. If he does that and more, this could be the beginning of special recruiting years ahead. Charlie Daniels has always been a supporter of our guys and gals in uniform. Special human being.

Malcolm Mitchell. He will play this season. Too much talent to sit, learning curve will be small. Playing against the type of competition he did in high school, as good as there is in the USA, he will be ready for the SEC. Playing in Valdosta is not a lot different than suiting up in many SEC schools.

Big, no, huge decision to be made as to whether he plays offense or defense. Can play either one. This young man is going to be responsible for points on the board whether playing DB or WR. He is that good. Strong hands, leaping ability, both of these gifts work on both sides of the ball. Someone in Athens is going to lose playing time to Malcolm Mitchell. What was it Grantham and Bobo said . . . best 11 on the field. There was a reason that Saban wanted this young man real bad. Mark one up for UGA. :)

sadlerdawg, LeMay is going to be more than an average quarterback. We know that he is going to get stronger, which will only make a really good arm, better. AM will share any knowledge that he has with the other quarterbacks. For LeMay, that is going to give him a tremendous boost as a Redshirt Freshman. I hope it works out that way.

Anytime I mention WM on this board, previously or now, your name comes to my mind. Bet that WM even knows your board name . . . . . B)

ogredawg, just as I will always relate wlayton's name when Isaiah Crowell is mentioned, the same goes for you on Jenkins. You brought light to me on Jenkin's talents. First hand information stands for a lot. :)
