Took another look at UGA Spring Football Game. This is the third or fourth time on ESPN3, watched different positions and came up with something like this.
Ben Jones face up with Kwame Gaithers. This was a damn battle. Jones does not bow to anyone, love his hardnosed play, from the snap until the whistle blows. Ben Jones won when he was playing smart football, call it time in grade. Kwame Gaithers was too much for Ben on the power level. Kwame Gaithers is not the football player that played high school football in South Carolina. He was not the same football player that was taking up space on the pines last season at UGA. Kwame Gaithers is a force, demands for someone other than the center or guard taking him on individually, can’t be done. What Kwame's defensive coaches are going to do is teach the young man how to read. Ben got under Kwame’s pads a time or two, then something surprising happened, Kwame Gaithers put an end to that. Kwame Gaithers is more than a big body, he changed some things he was doing quickly, whether from the coaches or understanding what was happening himself. Kwame is a force, and will be respected from game one on.
Hutson Mason, no doubt in my mind that he will back AM up. Hutson has applied himself and it appears to me that Christian LeMay will redshirt. Nothing wrong with that, if I am Christian, gives me the same look/see that AM had. Nothing to be ashamed of, it will only make his stock go up as did AM’s. Hutson Mason signed as a UGA player caught me off guard at the start. He had big numbers in high school, was not however being chased by a lot of elite schools. The “elite schools” made a huge mistake with Hutson, he is way the hell above average. We will see, put my poker chips in the pot on this one. Hutson can and will play, backs AM up this year and gets some playing time if the powers that be are dialed in. With the talent around Hutson, he won’t need AM type “wheels”.
Chase Vasser #33. UGA loaded with linebackers, agree with that, and one of the linebackers is Chase Vasser. We don’t hear much, but Chase did not sign with UGA to watch. This season without a doubt, he will be head hunting whether on the special team list or getting playing time. Hard nosed player looking for someone to hit, not blessed with the same talent that AO is, but he damn sure is not chicken liver. He will make some noise somewhere this year, special teams or wherever.
Derrick Lott. No way they are keeping this young man off of the field. Totally impressed with him, quickness, strength and appears to be super motivated. Outstanding athlete that I think is on a mission. This young man could start for many D1 football teams. Grantham will have him on the field more and more as the year progresses. Might even start before the end of the year, I think he is a player with a tremendous upside.
Could add others, this is a start. Coach JT has done much in a short period of time. It will be worth looking at many, maybe most of these players that spend the summer months with CJT. Not only will he tighten their bodies, he will get into their heads, has proven that in the short time that he has been in charge. Whether it was Richt or McGarity, don’t really care, someone made a good decision in the S&C area. Think most of us know who was responsible for the shift in policy.
There has to be someone on this team that you folks like, and reasons why. Football talk is going to be slow for a while, pitch in with players and opinions. Lots of special athletes not mentioned in this post.
Go Dawgs . . . Coach’em up!
