Just Ramblin'

Steve, thank you thank you thank you thank you! You are, in fact, DA MAN.

When looking at our team, evaluate the weakness, not the strength. That secondary is the weakest link in the chain. Someone should post comments like that on their bulletin board - we need to get to their pride a little. Rambo needs to watch some video of Sean Jones. He did NOT just run into guys and knock them down. He hit them HARD and WRAPPED THEM UP.

Boise St. has a really good football team. So does South Carolina. However, TOP to BOTTOM, UGA has better athletes. Recruiting rankings are not at all meaningless - they actually correlate pretty well with program success (in as much as I'd rather be in the top 20 than the bottom 20). Boise State has proven that the differences can be minimized through excellent coaching - what can we do if we add excellent coaching on OUR behalf?

The thing that makes Boise States offense so effective is that their run sets up their pass. They are a very good rushing team. Shut that down and make them one dimensional. Add in some Dome Field Advantage and you can really give them fits. (Great video, BTW.)

Every team in college football has ups and downs. Every single one. There are NO exceptions. We just had a down. Time for an up.

Can't help but close by adding how much I hate a few things -

1. Spring - sorry, but pretty flowers just give me allergies. Nothing but baseball and golf and sneezing. I like baseball, but football makes me happy.

2. Orange. I've said it before - if you buy a cool little sports car, you don't paint it orange. You paint it red or black. If you go to prison you wear orange.

3. Weak defensive secondaries - everything else can go beautifully, and one lousy blown coverage can ruin your whole day. Witness that Arkansas game. <ugh>

GO DAWGS!!!! Bring on September!

Somewhere we were talking about Bennett. Here's a good article on him......

Spring primer: Michael Bennett
Michael Bennett dressed for every game last year. He made the road trips. The coaches kept talking about how well he was doing in practice.

But as Allen Iverson would say, it’s only practice. Bennett, the freshman receiver, never played, and figured all along he would redshirt.

That makes this spring a bit different for Bennett.

“It’s just a lot more pressure on me,” he said. “But I feel like I’m embracing that and stepping up to the occasion, just really making plays out there.”

The 6-foot-3 product of Alpharetta got his wake-up call the first day of spring practice, when the receivers rolled out to the field without the likes of A.J. Green and Kris Durham. It hit Bennett that his time was coming.

“I was running (with) the twos, and I was like, Man I haven’t run with the twos in a while,” Bennett said. “So you’ve just gotta calm yourself down.”

Bennett is playing the “X” receiver spot, which lines up on the side closest to the boundary. He got good reviews for his performance in Saturday’s scrimmage, catching a long pass from freshman quarterback Christian LeMay.

There’s plenty of opportunity for any of the receivers to move up the depth chart. Tavarres King is basically set as the No. 1 option, and Marlon Brown will get every chance to start at split end. But the Bulldogs like to shuttle in a lot of receivers, opening up chances for guys like Bennett, Rantavious Wooten, Israel Troupe and Chris Conley.

Bennett said his strength is reliability in catching the ball – “I don’t really drop it” – while he had a blunt assessment of the rest of his game.

“I feel like I’m gonna run good routes. “I’m still working on the blocking – blocking’s not really my thing,” Bennett said, laughing. “But it’s goonna work out.”

Couple of players crossed my mind today.

Jalen Fields and Lonnie Outlaw.

Glad that these two young men decided to stay with their original commitment with UGA. Not sure that I like the reasons why.

More and more I become disgusted with what I think is a takeover from kids out there that think they can come and go as they please. Won't bring Bush or Newton or numerous others into this UGA discussion. Think most of us know that we would not want UGA caught up in something like that.

Jalen Fields seems to say that if Richt was released next year, he might have to look at other schools. I understand attachment, was very attached to my coach in high school. Did not want to lose my coach, but did not lose what I felt for my school to openly, and I say this with tongue in cheek, threaten to do something else.

Jalen has not played one down in Sanford Stadium, he however is basing what he might or might not do based on the only thing that he apparently knows about UGA, Richt. There is a hell of a lot more to Athens, State of Georgia and our football team than one dude trying to prove his worth, like I said, without playing one damn down between the hedges. Could not make it in on grades, and now he is trying to lay the ground rules down. Looking at his Junior College stats, he ain't all that. This is the same stuff that raised its ugly head more than once in the past x number of years in Athens. Too many arrests and loafing on the football field. I said that.

Lonnie Outlaw, think this young man might be one of the best ever. Keeps growing, height wise, and from his stats at the same JC that Jalen played for, I like Outlaw's stats more. My problem with Lonnie is this . . . . never have liked a player trying to play two sports while in college. Also, never have liked a coach on the recruiting trail promising a young fellow that he can do both.

Allow me this explanation. Jakar Hamilton came to us as the "Hitman", sounds good, but where are you supposed to be in the 3/4 when you don't know which receiver, or what area you are supposed to cover. How the hell are you going to play basketball with Coach Fox and learn what you are supposed to do with Grantham's defense. Simple damn answer . . . .you don't.

Quit coddling these folks that think they have a place in life because they can run a 4.4, or their vertical is off of the charts. Reminds me of our country being out of control with spending and bunch of idiots throwing money at the bonfire thinking all will be ok.

There are young men that want to play football in Athens . . . . maybe we will find more the AM's, Christian Robinsons and others. I have more, will stop now.

Go Dawgs! Those that want to be a part of the family. What is it now that Caleb King is saying . . . . I wasted my time because I thought I was above it all. Welcome to Athens Isaiah Crowell, Caleb King wants to put you, his statement . . . . "under his wings".

Buc, every time they allow these kids to have a press conference and put on a production to commit to a school, they just continue to feed their ego and think they do no wrong. Not to mention what is given to them during the recruiting process. We had some great athletes in my high school, and they went on to play college ball, but guess what--they just signed their letters of intent and went. No fanfare, no productions. Heck, maybe I should have called a press conference after I was recruited by the Army, Navy, and Marines to announce which branch I chose. I could have had my bulldog "Chesty" hidden offstage and brought him out when I announced?????

The SMART era CONTINUES!!!!!!

sadlerdawg, dead on. Every year seems to get a bit more involved. Don't like it. Guess I am truly getting too old. First thing Caleb needs to do is pay the debt to the post person he borrowed the money from. Then take IC under his "wings". First rule is always making those whole that you have wronged.
