After reading most of the comments about Saturday's square off of our offense vs. defense, came to a couple of conclusions.
Last week the defense supposedly kicked the offenses butt. Truthfully that did not sound strange to me, that usually happens with O's and D's this time of the year.
The thing that caught my fancy was the fact that Saturday the offense came prepared for battle and made a real "scrimmage" between the hedges.
A couple of catches in the end zone that appeared to raise some eyebrows. A young back that I was not aware of puts on a show against a defense that most of us think is going to be pretty good. Several players not in the scrimmage that are projected to be starters this season and the offense looks this good, at this stage.
What happens on the offensive side if IC is all that, along with the group that is currently showing backbone? This could be as good as we have ever been on offense. I said that.
Have said before and believe it, defense wins championships. Apparently this defense is also looking to kick some butt. If JJ is as good on defense as we hope IC is on offense, trouble is certainly brewing in Athens. If Drew is as good as many have said, come fall this team should not have to bow down to anyones 11.
Another question. Is our offense that good or is our defense a little less than we wish for? Or, are both sides of the ball that much improved? I am going to go with ogredawg and say that maybe our defensive backfied might have a problem or two. Hoping that is something that can be corrected before Boise State, that is if it is a problem. Boise State has a very good pitcher and an offensive line that blocks.
Back to the defense. I would still like to see our front four have both JJ and KG in at the same time on occasion. With the improvement that Kwame is showing and the talent that JJ has already shown, that would be a tough front four to run against. I think that I see depth along the defensive line, players with some experience and skill set.
I can remember back some years when a team with the players we have now would walk through the SEC. However, the same could be said about most teams in the SEC. No one gets worse, it's just that the best get better. Awesome conference. Guess we as a conference have the crystal to prove it.
Kicking game and special teams, this could very well be interesting. This group with good or excellent special teams play could and should be more than a handful.
