JoePa retiring after bowl game??

Though he has stated publicly he has no plans to retire, 84-year-old Joe Paterno may not return to Penn State in 2011. If the rumblings are correct, Coach Paterno will lead Penn State in the Outback Bowl and then ride off into the retirement sunset. ... At least that's what multiple sources in and around the athletic department are saying, all of whom state very emphatically that the wheels have been set in motion for Paterno to step down gracefully following the bowl game and for the school to commence a national search for someone currently outside of the football program to replace the living legend. All point to significant health concerns as being the reason behind the rumored abdication of his Happy Valley throne.

Oh well - this will be interesting

ESPN
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Florida has confirmed that former Notre Dame Fighting Irish coach Charlie Weis will be Will Muschamp's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

Florida's announcement follows Sunday's confirmation by the NFL's Kansas City Chiefs that Weis would be leaving the team to again join the college ranks. Weis will remain as offensive coordinator of the Chiefs through the postseason.

Following Sunday's regular season-ending loss to the Raiders, Weis said the Florida job will not be a distraction to him as he helps Kansas City prepare for its upcoming wild-card playoff game.

"I will do everything I can to help the Chiefs be successful,'' Weis told reporters Sunday. "I'm working for the Chiefs as long as we can make this work. Now that we're in the tournament, I'm hoping we play until February.

"I've gone through this once before [leaving the New England Patriots' staff to be the coach at Notre Dame], so I have a very good reference on how to separate family business from work. Fortunately, after going through it the last time, I had a very good experience. You go to work, you work all day. You do everything in preparation [for the game] and at the end of the day, if there's something else that has to be done, that's the time you do it."

The Gators also announced Monday that they have hired Dan Quinn as defensive coordinator and defensive line coach, Frank Verducci as offensive line coach and running game coordinator and George Wynn as director of football operations.

Quinn has spent the past 10 seasons coaching defense in the NFL, including the past two seasons as the Seahawks' defensive line coach. He worked alongside Muschamp when they were both Miami Dolphins assistants.

Verducci coached at Notre Dame in 2009 after eight seasons in the NFL with Cleveland (2007-08), Buffalo (2004-05), Dallas (2002) and Cincinnati (1999-2001).

Wynn comes to Florida after serving the past six seasons at assistant athletic director for football operations at Texas.

Effective January 1st, one of Georgia’s greatest running backs, Thomas Brown, will be rejoining the UGAfamily once again; not on the field, but in the weight room, on Joe Tereshinski’s strength and conditioning staff. I had the opportunity to talk to Thomas about his new opportunity and how he felt about coach Richt offering him the job. “I chose the University of Georgia coming out of high school because I wanted to be a part of a program that is committed to excellence. It will be an honor to return to this great University and aid in the continuing development of our student-athletes on and off the field”.

lizzards are ramping up - 3 nfl coaches

As the 2010 season draws to a close and the offseason carousel keeps spinning, Will Muschamp has filled eight vacant positions with a group that includes three coaches with extensive NFL experience. Headlining the list is former Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis, 54, who coached four years with the Super Bowl champion Patriots and is now the offensive coordinator with the Chiefs. ... Others joining the staff: Dan Quinn, a 17-year coaching veteran who has spent the past 10 seasons in the NFL, will be the defensive coordinator, and Frank Verducci, 53, who has 28 years of coaching experience at the collegiate and NFL levels, will oversee the offensive line and be running game coordinator.
