I however do not agree with the assertion that because CMR is a prayerful and respectful man, he can not be a good HC or can not instill discipline. Tony Dungy comes first to mind. Nor do I believe that this type of man can not be a motivator. Probably an unfair comparison but Ghandi and Moses come to mind. Too many cases to name where this great country has seen thousands motivated to fight by these same type of men.
So, bottom line, I agree with OSD. It is not CMR's time to go. He is a great offensive X & O coach and has put together some good offenses that were his guys. But he does need to learn from these 4 years and reinvent himself and his team. It was about this time 4 years ago that CMR lost his way. He started meeting with CEO's in Athens and Georgia at large and I believe was convinced he needed to run his team like a corporation. At that time he began to pull back from the team to become more of a CEO and allowed his staff of coaches to take the leads. His first mistake was that he did not make the correct choices in OC and DC. The second mistake is he did not man up soon enough and recognize that being a CEO means making tough hiring/firing decisions. I have seen young managers in business make this same mistake many times, but what you want to see is how they adjust. CMR made the call and fired WM. CTG and his staff will be solid and will be fine. The question is, what will CMR do about MB. This will be the make or break decision in my opinion. If he makes the call and takes over the play calling, we will be fine and we will compete for an NC in his tenure. If he allows the travesty with MB to continue past this year, he does not belong in the HC position. I counted no less than 4 times during the game today where the ESPN commentators questioned the offensive scheme and plays calls by Georgia. Everyone sees it.
Once again, folks, we all knew this would be a questionable year. New QB, new D scheme without the proper body types, all new D coaches. MB still calling plays. We all knew the getting SC and Ark early was going to be tough. Well it was!
What we did not expect. The O-Line which everyone thought would be one of the best in the country is playing uninspired. Our all world offensive weapon, is sitting down the first 4 games because he was personally stupid. The best punter in the country had the worst game in his career against SC. The second best running tandem in the SEC, as noted by some analysts, appears to fall down at first contact and fumbles inside the 5.
Yet, with all of that, we were in both games till the end. There is not a person on this blog that can honestly say they did not have thoughts of a slow drive with BW kicking the game winner with 5 tics when the Dawgs tied the game at 24 in the 4th QTR and then stopped Mallet on the following series. If you were like me, I was standing in my living room with my hands on my head. I was praying to let anyone other than MB call the plays. But then I soon learned who was calling the plays and my heart dropped. We were one freshman mistake away. I am not saying we will win the rest of the games, but let's give CTG a chance to correct his young players. Let's give CMR one final chance to do the right thing with MB. At the end of the year, if we still have all these same issues, then we can talk about the coaching changes needed.
It is still America, (we will see in Nov 2 for how long) and we are still free to spend our time watching football. Thank God for the little things.
