Questions like this are the very reason why boards, blogs and forums exist. It takes the conversation from the coffee shops and office breakrooms and broadens their reach.
Buc, you have posed several thought provoking questions that should make this thread a hot commodity for some time.....Great job!!
Allow me to add a little more kindling and kerosine..........
By and large, UGA has relied on a stout, knuckle draggin defense to save the collective ass of the offensive for as long as I can remember. Aside from the days of Herschel, Dooley, Goof, Donnon, and Richt all have coached offenses that were predictable, somewhat boring and lackluster, that relied on edge of the seat, white knuckle plays, improbable often impossible comebacks. Why do we love and miss Munson???...Because his throaty playcalling framed what I described above. Sure, we've had playmakers, but as we've all seen recently, it takes a great deal more than a few playmakers to get to the big game!
But when you think about UGA, its history, you think JUNKYARD DAWGS!...Irk's blood streaked forehead!....History put Willie on trial for his inability to consistently save our largely inconsistent and predictable offense, his jury pool consisted of a vocal fanbase and a hungry media reporting his every error....Will we give our new DC an opportunity to validate himself?...Guess we will see!!!!
Lets look back, shall we,.....Who was the OC before BoBo.....uuuhhhhh....That would be CMR...Does anyone recall a time when we ALL called for CMR to STOP calling plays and hire an OC?...This very board was a fully involved structure that needed venting....sorry FD analogy,...The vitrol regarding CMR was far worse than the heat Willie generated. Fact is, Mark was more dreadful than BoBo on the predictability scale, and clock management??? Dear Lord, we had our fair share of Charlie Foxtrots!....BUT BoBo is/was a student of CMR...So is anyone surprized that BoBo is little more than version 2.0 of Mark? Sorta reminds me of those Windows -vs- Mac commercials...and to parse the words of Edmund Burke, those that fail to learn the lessons from history are destined to repeat them!
Willie's dismissal may very well expose another area needing significant revision. Three yards and a cloud of dust no longer works in the SEC. Unfortunately, Spurrier and CUM proved that advanced forms of offensive schemes can work very well here. Proof is in their trophy case and I grow tired of reflecting back to the days of Herschel to prove a point.
I've noted this before, CMR and this program are at a cross road. Next years D may be a source of blame for poor performance but will be quickly excused due to the newness of their leader. BoBo will not have that luxury, unless we go the route of new QB, no reps,...blah, blah, blah....but whose to blame for the ill prepared youth?
I predict this site will be wide open, full bore with enlightening discussions beginning September 2010....As it should be!!!
GO DAWGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
