Oh, boy.
Look, you don't know me. You don't know how I root or who I root for or in what sports, except that I hate all things Florida. And, as a Gator fan, you can't tell me you LOVE Bobby Bowden, etc. The point is, I didn't start this thread to bash Tebow. I personally thought that, while he didn't earn the Heisman in 2007, it's a good thing he got it that year because he earned it in 2008 by being the best player in college football THAT YEAR. I started this thread to make fun of the media covering SEC Media Days and the idiots at ESPN who latched onto what is now being called \"SEC VoteGate.\" Which is ridiculous. Nick Saban lectured the media on their idiocy, and Tim Tebow flat-out laughed at them.
But, since you brought up the subject of how great a guy Tim Tebow is, I felt I had to respond. I do not have to respect Tim Tebow. I do not have to like him. And I don't. I think he's a whiny, homeschooled, overly sheltered crybaby who happens to be a fantastic athlete. I do not think that he broke down because he loves his team and his fans so much as because he lost a football game he didn't think he should have lost. It's not unlike Matt Leinert after the 2006 Rose Bowl saying that the better team lost.
I could go into all the personal and political reasons why I don't like Tim Tebow as well, but that's not for this forum. This forum is about football.
Jeez...to think this thread started off as a comedic essay about media hype and it turned into a low-grade tinkling contest over whether or not Tim Tebow is a great guy. Neither one of us knows him personally, so what we think doesn't really matter beyond WHAT COLOR LAUNDRY HE WEARS. Tim Tebow wears the wrong color laundry, so I root against him and don't like him. Even though I didn't like and don't like him personally -- or at least the perception I got of him -- I rooted for Quincy Carter because HE WORE THE RIGHT COLOR LAUNDRY. Truth be told, the same goes for Matthew Stafford. I'm fairly sure that Chipper Jones and I wouldn't get along if we hung out. Same goes for me and Yunel Escobar. But I root for the Braves, so go Chipper and go Yunel and to hell with Hanley Ramirez. Are you grasping this laundry concept yet?
I am a big sports fan. Part of being a sports fan means picking sides. I'm on the side that's opposite Florida most days. I also pick the side that's opposite the Mets, the side that's opposite the Yankees, the side that's opposite USC, opposite the Falcons, opposite the Tarheels and opposite Coastal Carolina, for that matter. And yes, I root for my teams.
So fawn over Tebow if you want. I reserve the right to call him a pigheaded, glorified fullback who threw a tantrum and got his team (historically motivated by pigheaded tantrums, let's be honest) to play better because of it. I reserve the right to say that his 2007 stats were inflated, and I have the numbers to back that up. I reserve the right to say that I disagree with Tebow on a personal level about most things.
Also, we sacked his punk behind 6 times in 2007. Man, was that sweet. And we'll do it again this year. TEBOW PANCAKES, BABY!!!
Now I've dedicated WAY too much time to this meaningless argument, so as Paul Sorvino says to Ray Liotta in Goodfellas, \"I have to turn my back on you now.\"
