a game of two halves

I've wondered about that myself, wlayton. There is no question that Coach Richt has taken the program to a new level in his tenure. However, I don't know what it will take to get the program to the next level. The team seems uninspired on way too many gamedays, IMO. Not being able to put an entire game together on so many occasions is unacceptable. They need a couple of ballbuster coaches on both sides of the line to get these guys fired up, not only on gameday, but the entire week leading up to it. Coach Richt is obviously very loyal to his staff, so I doubt that will happen anytime soon, though.

I couldn't agree with you more sadlerdawg!!! One thing CMR HAS done is recruit. He's a great recruiter and that's where it all starts but once you get the great players they need to be coached up to win it all!! Example sadlerdawg, as much as I can't stand UF, I do have to admit that Myer is a great coach and motivator.....as is Pete Carroll and many other coaching staffs.. etc etc.

Exactly, wlayton, and it doesn't always have to be the head coach who's the main motivator. Example--the video I'm sure we all saw of 'bama's strength coach (I forget his name) getting his boys fired up yelling about us wearing black for our funeral. Not just a pep talk, he's yelling this to them before practice even began, while they're stretching. I can imagine the motivation these guys get on gameday if that's what they get before an early week practice. It's no wonder they came out of the gate so fired up that night.

Pete Carroll -- 2 national championships in his first ten years. Pay-for-play scandal with Reggie Bush

Urban Meyer -- national championship in second year, playing for one in fourth. Refers to self in third person. Calls time outs in final minute of game to rub victory in one rival's face, kicks field goal in final 30 seconds of game to run up score on another. Universally reviled as scum of earth. Star quarterback who transferred from Utah to play for him quits team in disgust.

Mark Richt - Two SEC titles, four Divisional titles in first 8 years. 8 straight bowl games. 7-1 against Tech. First-ever win over Alabama in Tuscaloosa. First win against Florida since 1997. 6-2 in bowl games. No recruiting scandals. No academic scandals. No one hates the guy.

Vince Dooley -- Two SEC titles in first five years. Did not win another won for eight additional years. Took 16 years to win his first and only national title.

Boys, do you want to win FAST, or do you want to win RIGHT?

When you get as many penalties as the Bulldogs then there is something wrong with the coaching. It is a very bad time to be hiring a DC. The spread offense has defenses in turmoil and there is no telling (yet) which strategy and mindset will be best at stopping the spread. Worse yet, there will be tons of alumni yelling for new DC's and not enough of them to go around. However, it is a very good time to go shopping for a new OC. And as I have said before, I think we need one. Since day one Bobo has squeezed mediocrity from greatness.

and, to Dapolla, I want to add a few things ...
Winning is nice but there are more important things for a college program to accomplish. If the Bulldogs can accomplish both then that is fantastic. But if it is only one or the other, then I want coaches who teach character. Part of that character is being taught how to achieve your personal best. It does not matter if that best is #1 in the country, #1 in the conference, or just #1 for you personally. If it is their best then it is good enough for me. I am not seeing anything close to that. Every player no matter how physically gifted or not is capable of avoiding stupid penalties. Every player no matter how gifted is capable of being consistent. That comes from good coaching. I don't see it. and that upsets me far more than winning or losing.
