Not to take anything away from the intensity or players of today's game, but I have a feeling that the players back in the day's your talking about where a little bit more hard core than those of today. My reasoning behind that is the officials back in those days probably didn't call as many holding, cut blocking or roughing the QB penalties as they do today; so they had to be ready for what ever came their way. The game has truly evolved in the last decade or so. Plus how many coaches do you have today that were like ERK and run around bustin' heads with players to get them fired up? But didn't mean to get off topic from the thread.

Walker Lee Ashley, Penn St. LB, 1983 Sugar Bowl. Absolutely un-blockable that night. He was in Herschel's face just about every time he got the ball, and he almost single-handedly shut down the running game by himself that night. His play at LB forced us to go out of our game plan.
