UGA Football Needed Changes ---- Finally

8 years 8 months ago - 8 years 8 months ago #73028 by Buc
What is not for me to like? When discussing Head Coach Kirby Smart, at this point, like what I see, and there are reasons for that.

In the AJC article below Deshaun Watson is again mentioned, has been discussed on Dawgs.com for a long time, prior to not being offered by UGA. Clemson seemed to understand quarterback play on a different level than UGA did. Truth.

Kirby Smart and his defense in the last National Championship got a close up look at what a dual action quarterback can do when the chips are down.

Auburn had a dual action quarterback from College Park, Georgia that took them to a National Championship. Cam Newton. Same player that had issues in his college career, but proved he was capable of playing the quarterback position at a very high level. Previous coach offered a scholarship to Newton as a tight end. Cam is in the NFL now and like him or not, was runner up in the Super Bowl . . . . as a quarterback.

Smart and Company have now offered two (2) quarterbacks that play football differently than has been played (allowed) in Athens.

Kirby Smart watched and coached against Watson, who better to know what he witnessed in the NC, and reasons to "THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX".

Our quarterbacks were called on the carpet when they "dared" run anything close to an option play that included the possibility of the quarterback running the football. AM wanted to, did so in high school, but had his wheels taken away by the previous coaches.

Emory Jones will probably stand 6'6" and weigh somewhere in the neighborhood of 230 pounds when he signs his LOI. Young man has huge hands, don't see a lot of fumbles.

Kirby Smart is SERIOUS.

Will add this . . . . Mark Richt is trying to sign a dual threat quarterback to the "U". Wow, just wow!! Question is this . . . . If he signs a dual action quarterback, who will coach him, Jon Richt? Not being ugly, just trying to stick with the "history" I witnessed for 15 years in Athens.

stevedawg, really like Kirby Smart hiring Jim Chaney as his offensive coordinator.

Reason(s) . . . .

Jim Chaney has drawn attention from other names in college football that recognized his talent. urban meyer, Lane Kiffin, and others. Also spent some time in the NFL with the St. Louis Rams, soon to be the LA Rams again.

The combination of Chaney and Pitts together really excites me. These coaches do not have to spend time getting to know each other both on and off the field. They have already been through that stage of working together. That has been a recurring problem in Athens for a long time. Truth.

Reason I say that. Apparently Pruitt, grantham and others ruffled feathers in Athens. Neither having worked for the head coach at UGA prior to their time on board. Seemed there was too often a "dark cloud" over our program skillfully hidden by the Carney and Mahogany Row. Their time also "ran out". South Carolina Gamecocks forced their hands.

Makes a good or great case for the hiring of Kirby Smart. He understands that the coaching "team" has to operate "together", ruffled feathers over and over don't win games that are not walk overs.

Truthfully, I don't go into the 2016 Season fearing any team. Best team that I think we will face is Ole Miss. South Carolina will be better defensively, gators are for real. Talking heads seem to think that Tennessee is all that. That will be settled between the Hedges.

If our football team opens with a win against North Carolina, and they are not pushovers by any stretch of the imagination, the Red and Black could prove to be more than a handful.

Our team has talent that will be "coached up" . . . . finally.

Go Dawgs

Speak it Buc. Kirby will at least admit to one thing CMR would never do: If you can't beat them, join them".

A real man learns from what he witnesses in life and adjusts to those events. It takes a real "want to" for KS to admit that a scenario gave him trouble, and is adapting his philosophy to meet the new game.

Bobby Cox and CMR may as well been father and son. For 20 years, Cox always went "by the book" on his hitting. Case in point, he would pinch hit for a field player in the 8th inning of the world series because the "book" says to bat a lefty against this pitcher. Never mind that the starting field player was hitting .290 in the series and the pinch hitter was a career .245 hitter. By God, the "book" is never wrong.

It WAS wrong in 1996. We had the better team than the Yankees, better pitching, better hitting, but we lacked a manager.

Bobby would have us swing for the fences every fall. And every fall, when you are only facing the other teams 3 best pitchers, those .260 hitters with pop would somehow always seem to go 2-19 in the postseason.

CMR the same way.

BulldogShannon, so many good points you make. Points that relate to UGA football, even though presented through the eyes of us that watched Braves Baseball with the absolute best pitching in the majors, fan support and getting beaten because of what you say in the post. Lack of "Leadership".

You said this . . . . thank you.

Kirby will at least admit to one thing CMR would never do: If you can't beat them, join them".

Shannon, Kirby Smart returned "home" to improve what many of us have chirped about for years, not to follow in the footsteps of others.

Kirby Smart came to Athens with a Alabama football team that "twice" kicked our butts. Somewhere in that statement the "bleeding hearts" need to go back to Football 101 and quit pretending they understand the game.

I so admire Kirby Smart for doing this . . . . pointing out what he and his staff "intend to do".

Watching the program in Miami under the new coaching staff . . . . Still looks like the FSU program the way it was ran under Bowden and family. Mark Richt does not understand. Folks in South Florida want to believe, but . . . . questions are beginning to arise from those that know the game. Richt has once "again" surrounded himself with those that he can hold to task. Mark Richt is not a D1 Head Football Coach.

Say again . . . . Hard to walk away from 4 million dollars a year and the other monies that come along with being hired as the head coach.

From where I sit . . . . Guess it took those that have ran the UGA Football Program longer than 15 years to come up to speed.

Say again, keep our eyes on those above the Head Coach. That is where the "serious mistakes" have been made since . . . . optional, choose the years . . . .

I sincerely want to say this again, knowing I have said this more than once . . . . Keep this group of coaches together, they are "football coaches". I said that.

My bones tell me that this group of coaches will be together for a good while..

Core group has no delusional career thoughts

All have done a tour in the NFL....have reached a happy

Zone coaching college ball...in a very short time...

I sense that Georgia will move up the desirable coaching

Jobs in the country.... The world will see that facilities

And funds are no longer an issue... Winning will seal

The deal.....mission driven coaching staff will not abort

Until mission is completed. Go Dawgs

Go Dawgs!

Really like the hiring of Dell McGee.

Many capable coaches in the high school ranks that could and should be looked at closely for D1 work.

Smart knows the recruiting business as well as anyone. Dell McGee is a serious get for Georgia. Not only for his abilities as a coach, McGee will be the reason that we continue to be a university that running backs want to play for.

Was not happy with Thomas Brown leaving, but sure feel good about his replacement. Kirby knows . . . . :)
