scooby, you had asked about the name Francis. You were right about that being Tarkenton.
Little piece of history.
Tarkenton drafted by the Minnesota Vikings, first franchise head coach Norm Van Brocklin.
Fran had never played for anyone as tough as Norm, first head coach for the Vikings. Actually he caused enough problems for the Vikings that he, Van Brocklin and the Vikings came to a standstill, and Van Brocklin and Fran ended up elsewhere.
Norm Van Brocklin was hired by the Atlanta Falcons as head coach and soon Harmon Wages aka (Charmin' Harmin) found out just how tough the guy that quarterbacked the Philadelphia Eagles was as a head coach. Norm straightened Harmon out in the bathroom at the Atlanta Falcons preseason training camp. He got Charmins' attention and never let up on the “pretty boy”.
Atlanta Fulton County Stadium was where Falcon Football entered the NFL.
Some won't like this but . . . . the Falcons need to rid themselves of a couple of the upstairs folks if they ever want to get better than they are now. Falcons 2015 remind me of the Falcons in the 1960's, the beginning of the franchise.
Say this . . . . finally UGA stepped up and did what was needed for the Red and Black to ever move forward, took a long time, but MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.
I also have a lot of history on Fran Tarkenton, did not think I would discuss too much of that here. Will stop for now.
Allow me this . . . . I have not felt that Richt ever had a solid hand on the overall football program. He was good with outsiders and that was one of the main reasons he remained for the amount of time he did.
While Kirby Smart does not exhibit the same “Philly toughness” that Norm Van Brocklin did openly, pushover he is not . . . . much like the Falcons, the Bulldogs lost much of their toughness when VD played his hand in the Erk release. Biggest mistake ever in my opinion. Again, Stateboro's gain.
Sometime things are posted here scooby and I have to bite my tongue. With Francis, that ended the tongue biting.
Welcome home Kirby Smart. Have never meant that more than now. I know that not only has “Smart football” found its way back “Between the Hedges”, going to be respected again as an SEC POWER. Believe it will be sooner than many of the talking heads are predicting. Just what is it that “they” know?
Another reason that Dawgs.com is becoming one of the premier sites to read and post the truth.
Go Dawgs, many of those that I associate with in the Sunshine State are coming down just a little from the Jim McElwain hiring. Say this, the gators hired a head coach that I know is going to cause problems for many teams in the SEC. We needed what we got . . . . Coach Kirby Smart.
