Mark Richt Reversal?

With the latest hiring of Thomas Brown, brings me to ask this question.

There has been a lot of talk on this board and the internet as a whole about our “recent choices” of football coaches in Athens.

Brian Shottenheimer
Mike Ekeler
Thomas Brown
Rob Sale
Kevin Sherrer
Mark Hocke

There are others such as Jon Richt. Won't go into that hire again, except to say this . . . . The way that Bobby Bowden did business in Tallahassee has tentacles in Athens.

So here is the question. Will Mark Richt have a total understanding of the hirings he and “others” have made? Will the new coaches agree with the way football has been handled in Athens over many years and continue that policy?

Continue to see the Public Relations Machine(s) pump out the Mark Richt led team wearing the Red and Black. Looking over the new hires, have to say this . . . . look nothing like the hires our head coach has made since 2001.

Way I see it is this . . . . believe Mark Richt knew that something had to change, was not going to be him leaving, so he has done what appears to me as a 180 degree move.

Some of these coaches that are now in Athens will not go along with the old Richt way. Mark Richt finally understands that. Why do I say that? I look back to the “quick hiring” of Jeremy Pruitt. Anyone on this board remember the foot dragging that Mark Richt did prior to Jeremy Pruitt reporting for duty? I do.

What changed when Pruitt took over the defense, pretty simple in my eyes. Georgia changed from the Bowden/Richt method of coaching to the Saban/Pruitt method.

Having watched both coaching methods over several years, I prefer the Saban/Pruitt approach.

The last of the foot draggers . . . . McGarity. Anyone that has read this board consistently knows that many of us are on to the athletic directors ways. Public Relations folks are still hard at work trying to enlighten us on the fact that “all is well” in the Classic City. They want us to believe that Richt/McGarity never had a problem, even after we read their releases in print pointing out that all was not understood between the two.

I realize and know this . . . . Schottenheimer's “star” was waning. Have done some research on Schottenheimer. Not like everyone in the NFL and on the college level were after his signature. Probably like Bobo, Schottenheimer will feel “obligated” to our head coach, that is never a good thing.

Certainly lots to ponder in the off season! I'll speak only for myself when I say that I'll believe change is afoot in the Classic City when I see change! The CJP hire and subsequent improvements we saw on the D side could signal a reversal. However, I've seen similar episodes in this genre before. So I'm less likely to jump aboard the bandwagon until I see real, appreciable improvements across all disciplines.

Moreover, should this actually be a reversal, should this actually be the point where a CLUE and CMR assimilate, it will surely raise the question,....Why now?...Why, after 14 years of "Awwwww Shucks", arena gaffing, bed wetting attempts to build a dynasty, has he suddenly realized the error of his ways and reversed?

Guess we'll see in a few months, but I'm NOT going to expect much. I'd rather be pleasantly surprised than once again, snakebit!

Good post Buc/ncdawg. As I posted earlier CBS did not set the woods on fire in the NFL

However several SEC. HC'S did the same. Both have NC. on their resumes.

I will wait and see what CBS and CRS. show on the field on Saturdays.

NC_Dawg amazing what a "few million dollar contracts" can do to a persons gray matter. During my lifetime have noticed that "coin" effects both "good men" and those not recognized as such.

Trying to point out that I hope the hiring of Schottenheimer is not a "cover me" hire. I have no doubts about Schottenhiemer's abilities as an offensive coach.

I read something like this in the last few days of "looking around". Mark Richt hired Brian Schottenheimer after four or five hours of face to face football talk. When I was in the business world full time, still do some things when asked, a meeting such as that one I would post on the wall as a "maybe". Sounds like PR work to me, would bet it. Bet this . . . . that was not the "interview process" with Jeremy Pruitt.

Have to say this. Mark Richt has to have someone willing to stand with him. Most coaches do. That was the case that Richt/Bobo had. Easy to see why Richt had his "feelings on edge" in Charlotte. McGarity threw both Richt and Bobo under the bus.

You are one of a handful on this board that say . . . . Stay out of the way Richt.

Will add this. Bobby Bowden refused to stay out of the way at FSU, caused uncomfortable feelings in Tallahassee for over five years. Some of those feelings remain, even after a National Championship.

Don't know if I am getting my "total feelings" across and that is this . . . . Two more need to move on, or as you say, get out of the way. Not too hard to figure out which two.

yankeedawg1, one thing for sure. Many times a coordinator has to bear the brunt of criticism, both in college and the NFL.

Soon we will see whether Schottenheimer was constrained in New York, St. Louis and other stops.

One quote that I will put in the vault is the one made by Thomas Brown.

"The most exciting thing as a coach is you have guys that can do everything you ask them to do. That makes me instantly a better coach I already am. But I think we have a chance to be the best backfield in the country, I really believe that. I'll do everything I can to prepare those guys and simplify the game for them as much as possible, add my little flavor to it. They've already been well-coached in the past, they're experienced guys. ... I just want to add my own piece to it (as a) former player and now turned coach, and get those going."

Thomas Brown is a strong minded individual, that is his history, both as a player and coach. Is Mark Richt ready for another "strong mind" in Athens? Damn sure have "more" than one strong mind on the defensive side of the ball.

Spring football is going to be like no other that we have watched and read about in 14 years. Fully expect to see Thomas Brown and Rob Sales building a coaching friendship much like the one that Mike Bobo and Will Friend had. Brown and Sales working together, another rung on the ladder has been reached. JMHO.

PR will say:

"There was never a problem and besides we fixed it."

Wait and see/Prove it on the field is still the right position, but what I saw that I liked last year was fewer, way fewer, missed tackles and fewer, way fewer, stupid penalties by the Defense.
