From Athens- Friday Thoughs

Good Morning All,

It has been an interesting week of posting. Many good exchanges on a variety of subjects.

Before the BB when it was learned we would only have 8 bowl practices and Louisville would have up to as many as 15 much was said about our HC messing in the oatmeal again.

Louisville could have had 30 more and it would not have changed anything.

Yet didn’t hear it from the choir that our coaches knew what they were doing. Had we lost the game it would have been called out in spades. Yes that is what the coaches get paid to do.

However……… as wlayton correctly IMO pointed out we tend to sing about our failures and whisper when we do well and for a shorter period of time.

The topic of quarterbacks came up this week….and how we groom them at Georgia

Looking around the SEC and college football altogether we are not alone at how we go about this.

How many quality snaps did the senior QB’s ….. heir in waiting get at the following schools other than UGA?

Bama,Assburn,Chickens,Ole Mis,and FSU

I am sure if we put our minds to it we can add to the list

What OSU did with a third string QB brings into question once again is it a coaching/teaching issue during practice. He sure didn’t have much game experience going into the championship conference game.

Then turn around and beat the #1 team in the country ….hmmmmmm.

True there is no substitute for quality game experience.

Just so many snaps available in a game how best to use them other than winning the game makes for a challenge.

It is only stoopid when it doesn’t work

We kick it long and it is run back for a TD then why in hell didn’t we kick it short…kick it out of bounds if you what a short kick..the hell with a pooch kick..and it wasn’t executed very well on top of that

We pass on a FG and go for a first down against AU and Chubb scores

What kind of a swing in mo would there have been if we came away with no points? ….. and it would have been called stoopid

Big Classic City welcome to CBS….. reading about his background the words that came up several times from different sources.

He is a very good teacher…….like it alot

Like any new hire…time will speak to the wisdom of our choice

The reason why there is more said about the coaches when things go bad on the field is really simple. You don't get praised for doing what you are supposed to do, but it is pointed out when you don't.

My kids have to make their beds. It's part of their J-O-B-S in my house as children. When they are merely doing what they are supposed to do, I don't jump up and down and praise them for making their bed quite as much as I point it out to them when they fail to do that.

I have tasks to do at my job... requirements. No one praises me for just doing the daily requirements of the job, but it would be quickly pointed out if I didn't.

I'm not going to jump up and down and backslap as I high five the coaches when they merely show they are competent at their job. We had shizztons more talent than Louisville... we just did what we are supposed to do. We were the favored team so it's not like we waltzed in and upset Alabama.

When coaches go up and above normal and do spectacular things, we do praise them. We've praised CJP... we've praised CWF. We've noted Bobo he called good games. We praise when there is evidence of something praiseworthy, but again... just "not screwing up" is called competency and rarely do people get praised merely for being competent.

I guess though with Richt, it might be in order for us to start two or three threads about how awesome he was for not calling for a pooch kick that cost us the game, or for not screwing up the timeout situation. Then again... he didn't face a situation where he could have screwed it up in one of those two ways. So here's to you Richt for not being put into a crucial spot where you had to make a big decision. Since you did what was expected of you when you took the job, here have a raise.

I wish I got raises and heaps of praise every time I displayed competency, but that's just not how it works.

In he real world you're only as good as your last job.
There are no intangibles in winning or losing.

I praise my 5 children many, many times more for the good things they do versus getting on to them for the bad things. Positive reinforcement is huge imo, I try to take every opportunity not only to praise my kids, but my partner, assistant and even the young man that helps in the cleaning of the bathrooms in our tower.

I praise my kids 10-1 over the things I punish them for.....creates something I heard once called "self-esteem".

wlayton, I totally get where you are coming from, I am a strong proponent of encouragement and praise.
It brings out the best in people.

As far as Richt goes, I would say 3 plus million a year is ample praise for doing an average job.
