love the hell and water pistol story.
I hate to sound like Debbie Downer, but something small happened today that I think will slowly end college football. Northwestern players petitioning to unionize so they can get paid to play. A few UGA players tweeted their support.
Not good. Mark my words: one day soon we will have players boycotting games.
As a student who had to pay my damn way through UGA working the crummy breakfast shift at O'House dining and delievring Pizzas at night while others partied I say this: no pay for players.
When I went to UGA my girlfriend played volleyball and once a quarter we went to the athletic offices where she picked up her Pell Grant check for her to use as spending money. Free money.
$2500 per semester pell Grant for an athlete who already eats for free, hell, thats $400 per month. $100 per week. Thats a case of beer, a movie with your girl, and cash left over EVERY week.
There were nights on the weekend where I heated up tomato soup in my soup heater at Russell hall and had crackers with it.
They will come out of UGA with $0 college DEBT. 90% of kids will come out of there with $50,000 or so debt.
They can also do what others do: they can get a student loan of say $5,000 per year on top of the Pell Grant they are guaranteed at $2,500 twice per year (that is $10,000 per year of Blow Money).
That said, they should be allowed to make money off their likeness. AJ Green was given that jersey by the bowl. It wa shis property. He should be able to seel it in a free market.
A player should be able to seel his autograph.
But to unionize them like the AFL-CIO is just a bad bad bad bad idea......and one that will destroy the game we love.
