How to do a playoff

Any pros/cons on this approach to a playoff?

1. Take the 5 big conferences: ACC/SEC/BIG12/BIG10/PAC12. (Champ auto in the 8 team playoff)
2. Then, to make the smaller schools feel like they have a chance, mark out the 5 champions from the final BCS standings and take the next 3 highest ranked teams in order. (You will always have 1 of those smaller schools like Boise , N.Illinois, etc that pops up yearly; plus you probably get 1 at large SEC team too).
3. That is 8 teams.

Give the teams off from about Dec 7th through 19th (2 weeks)

1st round games:

Saturday, December 20. 1 v 8 (Rose) 2 v 7 (Cotton) 3 v 6 (Sugar) 4 v 5 (Chic-fi-A) (Cotton and Chic fil a joing the ranks. Each year, the games are rotated between these 6 bowls)
2nd round game (assuming top seeds advance)

Saturday, January 3. 1 v 4 (Fiesta) 2 v 3 (Orange)

3 weeks off to heal and recover, and then to play the weekend the NFL is off while waiting on the Super Bowl
Championship:

Saturday, January 26th. 1 v 2 In a stadium with the highest bid.

hey, just trying to throw out a new topic to distract us from all the coaching searches:)

Sure, that would work great but I believe while the current system is in play for a few years, four 16 team Super Conferences will be established.....then what?

Who knows what is coming down the pike? Many combinations.....

Just likee everything else we will start with 4 teams and it will rock along then if 4 is good why not 8. More tv revenue kaching is the language Minnie and Mickie speak

So I can see something like you have outlined. Do not see running the same length of timr that the BCS did. Call of mo money way to load thks BdS stir the pudding

BulldogShannon, like the way you laid the format out. I really like the idea of the extension of time, and also giving the NFL some competition in the football world. Believe the college football game is far more important in the South than other parts of the country. However once the games begin, M&M will watch the pot of gold grow larger. Feel sure this is in their "game plan" already.

Good post, good thoughts. :)

Here's the way I've always thought it should be done. Take 112 teams and make them Div 1A or whatever, then re-design the conferences to 8 14 team conferences, with divisions of 7 each. Make the conferences and divisions more geographically friendly and include state rivalries in the divisions. Set up the schedules to make for 9 or 10 conference games and 2-3 non conference, but they must be Div 1a, no more 1-AA chumps. Anyway, end of the season, the division champs play for the conference title, then the 8 conference champs are in the playoffs. No more rankings or subjectivity, no more politicking to get teams in. All conference champs make it, no debate.

The SMART era CONTINUES!!!!!!
