Never, and let me explain. The Junkyard Dawgs were just that. They didn't have the pedigree. They didn't have the breeding. They were the reason why Larry always talked about the other team being bigger and faster. He said those things because they were true. We were not fast as a team. We were not big. What we were was tenacious.... we would fight, kick, claw, scratch and just when you thought you had kicked us off.. we came back at you again.
That was what made me fall in love with UGA.
Then something happened.... Erk left, and the essence of the Junkyard Dawgs left with him. Rarely does the name embody the coach like it did with Erk. The two things could not be separated. Even in the future when our D was strong, it was not the Junkyard Dawgs.
Then as we waited for the second coming of Erk. something happened to this game. Rules changed again and again to favor offense and it's now virtually impossible to compete on D if you can't match the size and speed of the offense's skill players. The banging, the holding, the fighting for position, the hits...these things that made defenses like the Junkyard Dawgs were taken away. Now we have a track meet and such is life.
Can we be a great D... yes, but it will be a different style of play. It will be done with speed and size... something the Junkyard Dawgs never had a lot of...
I may be a minority, but the Junkyard Dawgs means more than just results. It was a style, and one that I think the game left behind.
... or as I prefer to think; Erk took it with him when he left.
