Buc, I like the thread and I agree with most of what has been said. To me, in general, college athletics have gotten out of hand. Pay, media, etc.. I believe the fold falls on many places. The media coverage, and recruiting hoopla that exist today is just stupid IMO. But the thing that is continuing to drive it is the fans. Not pointing out anything or anyone in particular, but if people quit watching these live coverage of who is committing where, then the ESPN's, rivals, etc.. would all quit making a big deal about them. It is going to get crazier becuase the companies are making some serious money off of it.
As for coaches making millions, I believe that a little bit of that responsibility falls on the fan base as well. Going to make a statement, and I could be wrong because I am doing something that I can't stand, but I am going to speak of times I do not know, but have heard about. 40 years ago instilling discipline, hardwork, and making morally sound decisions seemed to carry a lot more weight than they do today. If a coach won 9 games for a couple of years, and then had a bad season, he didn't have to worry about his job. Doing things the right way mattered then. Now, they don't. Its a win at all cost, and if you don't, see ya. Reason for saying that if Bear Bryant had coached now, he would have never made it. Hell, none of the famous coaches would have made it. I look their coaching records and they won a bunch of games. But then there are the 4-6, 5-5, years scattered in there, and many of them in consecutive years. Again, going to make a statement on things I have gathered from hearings back then, a coach could absorb those types of seasons as long as they were focusing on doing things the right way. That focus in general is not there. Coaches are cheating every day to land players. Tying it in to why coaches are making millions. Who put these demands for instant success? Fans did. The we want to win now, or you are gone created these salaries. Now that isn't the only reason, but it sure played its hand.
Sadler, although I have never thought of the idea of having a minor league system for football, the thought makes a lot of sense, and I agree. Then, you would get kids at the schools where they actually wanted to be. Lot more heart would be in the game for sure.
Sorry to be so long-winded, but this thread got me thinking. Very good topic as always Buc. Again, I want to note that the statements about past times are only believes from stories I have heard. I wasn't around so I definitely could be incorrect.
