TRUTH About College Football, Pause and Reflect

11 years 6 months ago - 11 years 6 months ago #52442 by Buc
While this might not be popular with those that blog or whatever . . . . Seems to me that we still have this thing going on with young men in high school trying to get as much press as they can get. To a certain point, nothing wrong with that, but it can be taken too far.

What the hell is going on in college football, not only players, coaches also. Seems to me that if you and I want a certain player to attend our university, we almost have to offer the impossible . . . . And do.

What does that say to me . . . . Much like sadlerdawg said several years back. First off, players are being offered a chance to play college football in the SEC. Next, if they are good enough, the NFL will know and offer the coin. sadlerdawg also asks the important question . . . . where does EDUCATION fit in?

Comes a time when all of us have to face this football thingy. Don’t care if you are 100 years old or 21 years old, all any of us want is for our football team to win. Period. Back in the day, the popular phrase used for young men playing football was . . . . Basket Weaving is offered, want to know what was wrong with that . . . . Some young men could not get out of the Basket Weaving Class. That was back in the all WHITE ERA. Nothing has changed, except the perception that things are better. Athletically.

Maybe we should get down to where the game of college football is. Want to go there? Didn’t think so. Some might. Many like going to the AJC to be first. Same ones that do not know what SAT stands for. Get my drift?

Coaches in college football are making millions, that is not a typo, making millions. The coaches that make that kind of money are riding on the backs of . . . . You and me. Want further reasoning? OK. This I promise you will not be the last "chat" on this subject.

Anyone think that the new contract between ESPN (Mickey and Minnie) and the SEC (Slive) is about the STUDENT? Surely you jest is you answered in the positive.

Step forward and say this . . . . Don’t care as long as we win. Hard to say? I read as much as anyone in the blog-o-sphere, you know what I have said is true. Right? You want to come back to what I have said, whether in disagreement or otherwise . . . . Most folks on the board that I represent will tell you this . . . . It ain’t easy.

There are going to be several follow ups to this post. Got the brass ones, show cause.

Go Dawgs, Coach’em Up . . . . The Money is there . . . . Ask Saban, ask Richt, ask Meyer. It is truly a long list and you and I are the fall guys. TRUTH.

I've always said I wished football (and basketball, I guess, though I don't really care about basketball) had a minor league system, much like hockey and baseball. In hockey and baseball, the "all worlds" are drafted and paid right out of high school, leaving the college games, for the most part, to the folks who love the sport and want to attend college. There's still the occasional superstar that gets drafted out of college in baseball and hockey, and without turning the college sport into a sideshow like football and basketball are, because 99% of the superstars in football and basketball don't have a love of the sport and are just waiting to cash in.

The SMART era CONTINUES!!!!!!

Buc, I agree with you. But I think it's much deeper than collage football all you have to do is look around its a what you can give me society the last election proved this. ESPN/ SEC is all about the money not about integrity while on that subject the NCAA has no integrity ether look at how they handle major schools that break the rules Auburn, Ohio, USC etc. and ruin a kids chance of living his dream because of something out of his control. What's the answer I don't know but sooner or later the dam is going to bust and when it does its not going to be good for anyone.

sadlerdawg, takes me back to the days when we had Bullpups. Still believe that the one thing wrong with college football is young men sitting on the bench and not playing. Once upon a time, Georgia and Tech played on Thanksgiving Day and it was a much anticipated game.

Now where we are, have to play by the NCAA rules, can't have games like back in the day. Have to be careful and not get anyone "hurt". What BS. Know that I have more to say on the subject, really crawls up my backside.

Scottish Rite Children's Hospital was about more than we see from both coaches and players this day and time.

Some of us are old enough to remember the JV and Varsity teams in high school. Too much "greed" these days and it is going to be more pronounced as soon as Mickey and Minnie and the SEC finalize the "network".

Lifted from archives . . . .
For 60 years, Thanksgiving Day was a special day in the history of the Georgia - Georgia Tech rivalry. It was on that day that the Georgia and Georgia Tech freshman football teams, and in later years the junior varsity teams, met at Tech’s Grant Field. The game, played from 1933 to ’93, annually benefited the Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital and became a nationally-recognized event.

During those years, freshmen were ineligible and each school played an annual freshman or junior varsity schedule. As such, many who would become the greatest players for both schools were showcased in this annual game.

The Georgia-Georgia Tech freshman/jv game featured many future stars of both college and pro football - among them former Georgia QB Fran Tarkenton who played in the 1957 game.

Among the many who played in the annual classic. were legendary Georgia players like Fran Tarkenton, Bill Stanfill, Frank Sinkwich, and Charley Trippi and Tech greats like Ray Beck, Buck Martin, Pepper Rodgers, and Kim King.

The charity game had its origin in 1930 when teams representing the northern and southern divisions of the old Southern Conference played an all- star game. In 1933, Georgia coach H.J. Stegeman and Tech coach William Alexander convinced a group of Atlanta businessmen to serve on a committee for the purpose of selling tickets to a freshman game between the two schools. The proceeds were designated to Scottish Rite. The Governor’s Cup was presented each year to the winning team.

The game became a southern tradition and prospered for decades. However, scholarship and roster limitations caused discontinuation of the game in 1993; but in 1994, a “Legends Game” was held to maintain the tradition of the game.

The NCAA, at the schools’ request, agreed to recognize the varsity rivalry and beginning in 1995, the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta annually presents the Governor’s Cup to the winning team.

Takes me to this . . . . The NCAA, REALLY, THE NCAA. Emmert shame on you and the group that surrounds you and your opinions. Hard to get oil and water to mix, actually impossible . . . . that is where the NCAA is and has been for many years. Just leave, until you do, there will be those of us that understand FOOTBALL, COLLEGE FOOTBALL. Sir, or maybe I should say "Your Majesty".

How you doing Kolton Houston? Ever wonder about "common sense" from a HIGH LEVEL? Would love to use language here, out of respect to you and what you have gone through . . . . can't.

Where is Forret Gump when we need him? :) Know what I mean Emmert?

Look, I know that it is a slow time. Most on this board and others, history does not go back that far. There are still a few of us that were there and remember both the "good" and the "bad".

The things in college football that bother me, don't necessarily bother you. That is a given. History has a way of passing along time tables. Sometimes I do that.

Really, do me (and yourself) a big favor . . . . don't go to the sites on the AJC and play the "FIRST" game that seems to matter more than the conversation about the Red and Black. What the hell does "FIRST" have to do with Saturday football in Sanford Stadium?

Is this site a good football talk board? Sometimes. This board is no different than many, only as good as the content provided by the membership, and the base membership is strong. I do know that many peruse this site, feel sure that the leader appreciates that.

There is not a site that discusses Georgia football that stands closer to the truth than this one. I monitor several sites and the one that I like next to this one is the Leather Helmet. Greg has done a "seriously" good job of promoting his site. He calls it like he sees it, and when wrong is quick to make things right.

Have to move a step back . . . . The Lady Sportswriter . . . . Kimberley Nash, if you don't read what she has to say, that is your mistake. She is not good, she is damn good.

So much good material can be found outside of what is called the "main stream media". Know what the problem is? Folks are too damn lazy. I said that. With that . . . . :)
