You're right Wartdawg, it won't happen. We'll be treated to excuses, anecdotes, cutesy PR statements like "we're just doing the doggone best we can do right now to win games." They'll continue to ride the Richt horse so long as he keeps pulling down top recruiting classes and finishing 10-2 and makes it to the 2000-whatever Toilet Bowl game.
This game tonight exemplifies Mark Richt's legacy at UGA, and that is a complete failure to coach up his players to play in the big games. Period. Never have I been so embarrassed of a team's performance, from top to damn bottom as I am this team tonight. I've never seen an SEC team that has had year-after-year of wall-to-wall talent that has been continually pissed away as I have this UGA program under Richt. This season's schedule was a made-to-order trip to Atlanta for this Bulldog team, and yet, here we are in another big game that will separate the wheat from the chaff in college football and here we are again blowing it in grand fashion on a national platform before a national audience.
To say this performance tonight was an abysmal disgrace would be too good of a compliment. There was a complete failure at every level on this team; from coaches to players. I've been saying this for a while, but Aaron Murray is not the QB to take this team to the promised land. I'm done with him. To admit to ESPN that he's been having nightmares about being hit by Jadeveon Clowney tells me all I need to know about Aaron Murray. Move on son, go finish your grad degree in psychology and leave the playing to the men.
And all this talk about his maturity and his development...Excuse me, but let's shelf the BS and all face reality - Murray doesn't have all the pieces of a top tier QB which takes teams deep in the SEC. He has some of the pieces, but some of the pieces don't make a complete puzzle. He has a million dollar arm and a 10 cents head. As a junior, I've seen Murray continuing to make the most fundamental freshman mistakes. He still cannot protect the ball, he still is terrified when he hears footsteps, he's still holding the ball far too long which is resulting in far too many negative yards on sacks, he's still forcing the ball into double and triple coverage, he still has a low trajectory on his passes which are continuing to get batted by defensive linemen resulting in interceptions off tips. Any game that Murray plays in where he does not have the clear advantage and he looks completely uncomfortable out there and tonight was no exception.
The offensive line was utterly manhandled by SC's defensive line. They weren't even a factor. For a team that was averaging UGA's offensive numbers to not even be able to punch in the ball at the goal line in four tries tells me everything I need to know about the O-line. And again, Murray continued to throw into double coverage on King.
The defensive line got no pressure whatsoever on Shaw and the entire defensive unit was biting hard on the play action. So what did SC do? They ran the play action again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. Was there any adjustment on Connor Shaw's running? No. Was there a defensive coordinator even at the stadium for UGA? It sure as hell didn't look like it from my vantage point. Where was the adjustment at the half? Do we have a coach to make adjustments in second half? No, apparently we don't. This defense that was supposedly "for real" looked completely disoriented, playing way too soft with far too many cushions.
Anyone with a brain knows that this should spell the end of the road for Richt. There has to be consequences. While I don't think there will be any immediate firings, I do think that in the end, this spectacle tonight may just be what's required to finally bring the Richt experiment to a close.
