Georgia Football, Speed and Erk . . . .

Wondering if some of you see what I think I am seeing with our football team.

When I look at the young men that have signed up to play football in Athens, one thing that I see a lot, whether offensive or defensive side. . . . speed.

On this board it was discussed quite a bit the last couple of years. (Speed) When I go through the folks that I think are going to play this year in Athens . . . . don't beat me up too bad folks . . . the same thing that I saw with Florida once upon a time is now going on in Athens. Believe it or not, I am a Red and Black Dawg. Our team is getting sooooo fast.

Think back to the National Championship Game between Florida and Ohio State. Ohio State thought they could do the same thing to Florida that they did to the teams they played in the big whatever. They (Ohio State) found out that speed kills.

Would wager this with the recent hiring of Meyer . . . . Ohio State will be a lot quicker, faster or whatever word we want to use. Meyer learned a lot during his stay in the SEC. Like it or not, that is the truth. Ohio State will benefit greatly from Urban Meyer spending time in the SEC. Sometimes you can't beat them, you join them. Urban did, rode in with a plan . . . left with a lot of knowledge, (Football Knowledge). Like it or not, if he runs a pro style attack, they are going to be hard to beat.

Back to UGA. Grantham is on track. Unless I miss my guess totally, this bunch gathered in Athens is going to cause a lot of folks serious headaches. I believe that he is now secure in the fact that he has the talent that he needs to compete in the SEC. Coach Grantham really wanted Jordan. Got him. Grantham has been in Athens two years and as some have said, he knew what he wanted, and to give Mark Richt a pat on the back, got the heck out of the way and watched a "professional" do "his thing". Agree or disagree that is the way I see it. That is not a shot at Mark Richt, that is one of the times that I think Mark understood, stayed away from what he did not know. I also believe that Mark Richt and Todd Grantham are friends. That is very (very) important, in my simple mind.

Some discussion about defensive backs . . . . with the front seven or eight, you better be damn sure that you can make the play called work on the offensive side. I am beginning to feel the same way that AM and the other returning young men that chose to hang around for another year feel. This is a damn good team, with experience on both sides of the ball. Where the experience is missing, there is a lot of talent. Talent with a lot of speed.

My biggest wish is that the offensive side will go into this season with a chip on their shoulders. I think that is going to happen. Something, not sure what it is, however I will not drink the kool aid at this point, I will watch . . . . Richt/Bobo and what they do with this talent that they have lured to Athens. That is not a slap, that is a wish/hope that our coaches on the offense have a grip on the "speed" that they have convinced to wear the Red and Black.

One more thing . . . Quayvon Hicks, welcome to Athens, you and folks like you have been missing from our line up for much too long. I truly believe that Quayvon Hicks will leave a serious reputation behind him, which will benefit all of us that watch the game and for a big man . . . he has a certain amount of SPEED. I love football, especially when the colors are Red and Black along with some Silver. :)

Erk, we are peddling, hoping and trying to bring the tradition back. Stick with us my friend, could happen, Coach Grantham is now carrying the colors.

Go Dawgs!! Coach'em up, lots of talent between the Hedges . . . :)

Speed cannot be taught. I recently read something about the key differences between SEC defenses and others. This piece looked into players draft and succes in the NFL and that pointed back to overwhelming D line talent in the SEC when compared to all the other regions and conferences. Get after the QB and anyone can play corner.

kentdaddy, read maybe the same article. Was very specific about the SEC and the D linemen as you mentioned. Some of the first words from Grantham's mouth was get after the quarterback. Jarvis and others have smiles on their faces from ear to ear. Makes me happy too. . . . Also believe that Cornelius Washington is going to have a tremendous year, would like to know how fast/quick he really is.

Thank you Chief growl . . . . sometimes I just overflow. Looking at the players size and weight from last year, another year of workouts, could get scary. Friend probably needs to equip his offensive linemen with brass knuckles come Spring . . . . :)

While I agree that our D will continue to grow and get better, I do not feel that anything will change on the offensive side of the ball. For the last 2 years we have run the same old 5 to 6 plays over and over, and against a quality team, it only goes so far. I find it hard to believe that our players are either to stupid or BOBO and CMR are to stubborn to change anything . We will just stick with the basics and hope the D can keep the other team from scoring. This works for awhile, but we throw deep on play one, run up the middle play 2, run wide play 3, the kick. Once the middle of the 3rd quarter gets here, our D is gassed, hench other team moves ball scores and wins game.

I have read nothing or seen nothing to make me think that this year will be any different than last. CMR has made no indications that we will overhaul the offense, or try to install some new wrinkles. We have 3 great backs, and great receivers, but when you run up the middle against good Defenses, it does not take long to stack the middle.

Like I said, still the same old offensive players, same old coaches, so explain to me how we can move the ball against USC, Ala, LSU, or ever Fla with their improved D. It sure does not take a expert in the game to figure out how to stop our offense.

One things for sure, there are some really strong football players on this team and I want to see them play before making up my mind as to whether things have changed or not. Personally I believe there is good reason to be very optimistic about the team, hopefully the coaches are up to the task and UGA will be back on course.
