Having said that 30 pts in the SEC makes you a winner most of the time...
I keep hearing that. How awesome it is we averaged so many points in the SEC (against
a regular season schedule that didn't include Bama, LSU, or Arkansas), but sometimes
it's not just about a point total.
Sometimes it's about an ability to control the clock to help out your D.
Sometimes it's about not giving the ball back to the other teams offense so they
have no chance to come back and beat you.
Sometimes it's about your ability to stand up and knock someone elses **** in the
dirt during crunch time.
Sometimes it's about consistency.
How well did our offense fare in those areas?
I watched Warren Moon led run and shoot offenses run up and down the field in the NFL setting all sorts of records, and saw that team win exactly NOTHING because of failures
in the areas noted above.
Time and time again this offense put a bunch of points up, but failed at something
in a crucial moment. Where was our offense in OT? Despite the fact we screwed up and
let them tie the game, we entered OT on equal ground.
1st OT... we have so much confidence in our high powered offense that we don't even
attempt to move the ball, willingly choosing to let our kicker try from what was 50%
probability yardage.
2nd OT... incomplete, 0, penalty, incomplete, net -5 yards.
3rd OT...incomplete, incomplete, sack. It looked just like the majority of the Boise game.
Der der der der der - kicker kicks ball into the back of the head of one of his O linemen.. game over.
We can score 30 all we want... but when we lapse into incompetency during crunch time..
we still wont win against quality opponents. We'll make some nice individual stats,
but the one stat that matters wont be pretty.
Do I credit the D... sure I do, but we also went Homer Simpson for stretches of time
during many games this season... times when we just looked like we didn't know what
was going on or even where to line up. We most certainly don't fool anybody with
our running game when we line up in the shotgun, because we only have 1 run to
the RB out of that formation.
