When I was a kid growing in up Hartwell, Ga (which is located halfway between Clemson and Athens) the rivalry was as intense during the early 80's as any has ever been in football. Close friends and family would literally stop speaking to each other during football season. Throw in the Tech fans and you had three way hate fest.
One of my neighbors was a big financial Clemson booster and the following was a story I was told at the time. While in Athens one day my neighbor and another man saw Herschel drive by in a brand new Camaro. My neighbor the Clemson Booster made the statement "there goes that SOB" in the car we bought him. I have no way to verify if the story was true but always assumed it was. So if an 18 year old Herschel Walker took a car as a gift from a team he didn't sign with I can't write that off as an example to judge others by. Again, no proof and no disrespect to a charitable man.

As far as IC as a running back, who will know his name 10 years from now. Herschel Walker is still remembered . . . why . . . . because he was a MAN OF PRINCIPLE and also true to UGA.southernlover wrote:
Sorry Buc but Herschel is remembered for winning a Heisman trophy and the only NC for UGA in the last 30 years in addition to arguably being the best athlete to ever come out of the southeast. This is a man who recently on ESPN said "I wanted to quit football and join the military so I could KILL people". Also got a lot of ink at the age of 48 for saying he wanted to fight Steve Spurrier.
A lot of the criticism heaped on IC now are from the sames ones who were ecstatic when he signed last February. Everyone knew where he was from and what he was about but didn't see a single post saying "hold on a minute, we shouldn't sign this guy".
Hmmmmmmm....
Interesting tid bits about HW. Did not see in your post any of the good things that Herschel did outside of football, and there were many. Married a young lady that lives just across the river from me in Cocoa Beach. There is a long list of positives about Herschel other than Heisman and NC.
Beg to differ with you on everyone knowing where IC was from and what he was about. Explain that to me in greater detail, not generalities. Not sure I understand the point you are trying to make.
I would pose this question to you . . . If you knew that IC was going to show himself as he has done time wise in approximately one-half of the schedule, would you have been as gung-ho then.
I'm really going to step in it with my reply but you asked so here goes.....
IC is from Carver Columbus which is an all black school. Statistically blacks are more likely to come from single parent household or be raised by grandparents which in many instances lack the discipline of a two parent household. Black communities also perpetrate the Hip Hop culture which as we know celebrates the gangster lifestyle. High School coaches want their players to succeed for a variety of reasons so they may not "come clean" with a college recruiter about an athlete's past transgressions.
This is not meant as a blanket statement to all that come from heavily black communities as there are many success stories. But you can look at Miami as an example to back up my statement.
Not knowing exactly why he has been suspended for it is hard to say. Can't say that I wouldn't have been gung-ho but at the time everyone wanted him, Saban included.

Bottom line....fans really don't have much of a clue about recruits....but if EVERYBODY wants him, we do too. Most schools just take their chances. IC is one of those and only time will tell about the "kid".
Most everything us "experts" say is 90% speculation anyway.....that's the make up of a forum.

Southern.. that's why I posted that link to a pre-season interview with Jasper Sanks about
IC, and "where he comes from". JS knew full well the story, and possible issues that IC
was going to face.
My feelings on this is that we have to give people a chance, and sometimes those chances we
give are painful for all involved. The reason I would be tough on IC is because that is
what it might take to turn a life around. It's just like the military in some regards when
they show up with attitude and a history, you've got to break them down before you build
them back up. It's often a risk to recruit anyone who might have a checkered past or come
from a rough climate, but if there is one thing I do appreciate about CMR it is the fact
that I truly believe he wants to build winners in life and have these kids leave the program
as better men than they were when they entered.
Hopefully all of this is just part of the process. We just now have to sit back and see how
these young men react. It's no longer about where you came from... it's about where you
want to go.
God Bless and Go Dawgs
