Strength and Conditioning Not our problem?

Strength and Conditioning Not our problem? was created by BulldogShannon
After speaking with my booster friend, listening to Jeff Danzler, and listening to an interview with one of the guys at UGASports.com, I have come to the conclusion that strength may not have been UGA’s weakness, it has been mental toughness and preparation.
I found out from ugasports that the OL turned in their best ever strength records before the season started; I found out that a ton of NFL players from UGA come back to get in workouts because it’s better than the pros. Besides, if you are making kids puke in garbage cans, how much more can you really push them?

IF JT can bring back the mental toughness to the workouts where we refuse to lose in the 4th quarter, then the hire is a good one. But if we are simply expecting our kids to be stronger, that may not happen.

Their view at UGASports was that ever since the Van halenger stroke, he has been considering retirement and family-I don’t blame him. Maybe he just lost some of the meanness needed to GATA.

Strength didn’t make us get burned on 10 bombs this year-new system did.

Strength didn’t cause us to lose three games because we fumble going in for scores-mental toughness did.

Thoughts?

Hmmmm, interesting. After looking at the year long stats, I would have to say that out new D scheme cost us the games ALONG with AJ (sorry, can't help myself). Can't average giving up 29 points per SEC game and around 25 points per game for the season.

Looks to me that the D scheme cost us, which incorporates mental toughness for sure. But strength is ONE thing, endurance is another. You can be strong but can't run to the mailbox and back without getting winded. Just believe they need some of the new training techniques that are being used in today's athlete's and am not sure JT has that knowledge.....or, maybe he does....we'll see.

They need strength AND endurance.

Exactly, wlayton. There is a long list of boxers an MMA fighters who are strong enough to easily knock people out in the first round, but if they don't, they look like a joke the rest of the fight because they are sucking wind the entire time. Endurance is just as important as bench press records and all the other strength indicators.

The SMART era CONTINUES!!!!!!

he is saying the right things about bringing in new methods-just hope he means it. I don't think we have a conditioning problem if kids are puking -I mean, how much harder do you push a kid than make him throw up?

Agree with the strength/conditioning issue. It is an issue.

When you have players from other teams pointing out that they are kicking our butts, they don't raise the strength issue, they are refering to cardio and the related issues. One of the related issues at this point seem to be the food these young players are eating.Makes a heck of a difference on the cardio side.

Arm wrestling is one thing, running wind sprints is another. Here is hoping that JT is up on the cardio and table fare. Most of these young men are mentally tough, most would fight a snake, no wind, entirely different.

Food can be directly related to puking.

Agree with you Buc... I'm just saying I don't know if the testimony of other players is 100% true or not-could just be good ole fashioned smack talking.

Believe me, I think we definitely to change things a little, I just don't want these minor changes to be made just to keep us fans quite. I think we have bigger issues than who the strength coach is; for example, we are still gonna have the annual Mike Bobo 30 yard out pattern on 3rd and 4 inches from midfield in a tie game next year where the other team will get one last shot to beat us; we are still gonna have the usual un prepared team who gets burned by an onside kick against AU that I told my wife was coming; we are still gonna have the decisions against AU down 35-28 and we go for three-knowing FG's aren't gonna help us.

That is the only point I'm making.
