The Georgia men's tennis team closed the fall portion of its schedule by winning all seven matches against Georgia Tech Sunday at the Bulldog Scramble.
Georgia's 14th-ranked Javier Garrapiz, No. 76 Drake Bernstein, Sadio Doumbia and Ignacio Taboada each finished the tournament with a 5-0 singles record. They were also undefeated in doubles, and as a team the Bulldogs were 34-10 during the three-day tournament.
Four of Georgia's singles wins Sunday were in straight sets as Garrapiz defeated Ryan Smith, 6-3 6-0, Doumbia beat Magin Ortiga, 6-4, 7-5, Taboada topped Miguel Muguruza, 6-1, 6-2, and freshman Campbell Johnson notched his first career win over a ranked opponent, 7-5, 6-1 over No. 80 Eliot Potvin. Bernstein rallied to beat Dean O'Brien 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.
In doubles, Doumbia and Taboada defeated Potvin and O'Brien 9-7, while Bernstein and Johnson downed Ortiga and Smith, 8-4.
"We had a great tournament," said associate head coach Will Glenn. "We had four undefeated guys in singles and doubles. Ignacio and Sadio had a great comeback today after getting down 5-2, but they kept fighting. Sadio is starting to come along. It was the best he's played this fall.
"Drake is definitely back on track and is playing well. Javi had another good win today against a good opponent and continues to impress us. Ignacio is really making a push for us towards the end of the fall. Campbell had his first ranked win, and that was great to see."
Georgia returns to action at the National Tennis Collegiate Classic in Palm Springs, Calif., Jan. 13-16.
