Getting it Right

wlayton, you are totally correct throughout your post.

By no means do I subscribe to AM running the ball 10 or 15 times. What I like, and what I know from watching AM a great deal is this . . . . he can move, not stiff in the hips. As you know that leads to gaining time for the receivers, whether WR's or tight ends to find an open area. Fran made a living doing that. Difference between Fran and AM . . . AM's arm is stronger.

Love the "Pro Style", sometimes you can do both with the right QB, which I feel sure you would agree with. Mike Leach type of offense is exactly what I know will work for this QB. sadlerdawg hit the nail on the head a few days back with his posts on this particular subject.

With AM, wlayton we know that he needs to be facing the Dline, not sure that we would be 1-2 at this point if he was taking the long snap. That is where his comfort zone is, just feel that the coaching staff is trying to fit AM into a pair of cleats that don't fit. My opinion. :woohoo:

Agree. They should have AM in the shotgun. No coincidence we played well on offense in the 4th qtr when he went into the shotgun. With his scrambling ability, it gives him a jump start at avoiding the rush if he's facing the line of scrimmage instead of turning his back when dropping back. No, he doesn't need to run the ball, rather use his running ability to avoid pass rushes (of course he will ocassionally run when necessary) and buy some time.....somebody WILL get open if you flood the secondary and AM WILL find them.

Can only agree wlayton.

Picked this up from our Home page. Head Coach certainly in agreement with what is being said about AM.

•If Dan Mullen, the Mississippi State coach and former Florida offensive coordinator, had gotten his way, Aaron Murray would be a Gator. Mullen said this week that he has known Murray since the UGA QB was a freshman at Plant High School in Tampa. That’s when Murray came on the Gators’ recruiting radar.
“Watching him develop now,” Mullen said, “you see a guy who has a lot of talent, has a very, very strong arm and has the athletic ability to improvise and get himself out of trouble and make plays with his legs.”

I am on the same page with the both of you. AM can play both under center and in the gun.
I will beet you a stale donut that when AJ comes back you see more of that plus by the time we get to JAX AM will be running no huddle and doing it well.

As dark as the past two weeks have been brighter days will be here soon.

Buc, I agree with what you are saying totally. Not only that, but with AM in the gun, he has longer to see the field. Plus, you talk to most defenses that face a team that is known for play action, and they tell their D Ends to aim at a point 7yds in the backfield on passing situations. That is exactly what happened Saturday. They picked a spot in the backfield and usually were in Murray's face about the time he got his eyes turned.

As far as the coach's knowing more football, I agree with both sides. Some fans do not know what they are really talking about. This board is different than most fans. Everyone on this board has a great understanding for the game. We know how the game should be played. So I can definitely see where you are coming from because we are fans and we do know the game.

Couple of things that really jumped out in my mind about last Sat. and this is the last time I will bring it up. Stupid coaching decisions that I am pretty sure it doesn't take a football guru to figure out.

1. The timeout after the Thomas run with 1 minute left in the game. We take a timeout as soon as the kid touches the ground after a 9yd gain on 2nd and long. I can not understand why. There was no reason for it. If you want to take a timeout, let the clock run down to somewhere around 40sec left in the game. Then, if you do not get the first, you do not leave enough time for Mallett to drive down field. Plus, UGA was already at mid field. Let the clock run down so that worst case scenario you are playing in OT. You never give an offense like Ark's a chance with any amount of time at the end of the game when you know you might not touch the ball again.

2. The play call on 3 and 4. You have been sacked 4 times off the PA fake. Why not get in the Gun, which has worked all game, and hit a 5-10yd route. Instead, we run the play action and run all vertical routes after admitting before the game that we do not really have a deep ball threat. Play for the 1st down in that situation. Not the homerun. You have a roster full of possession receivers and you try to strike vertical.

The Result from those 2 decisions. Ark gets the ball back with a little under a minute. Too much time for one of the best offenses in the country. I know the defense bears a little blame, but why even give that offense another chance with that much time.

What could have happened:

UGA does not take the timeout. Instead of stopping the clock at 1:06, you stop the clock at :40. You leave plenty of time to get into FG range if you get the first. You might force Ark to use one of their timeouts, or you leave Mallett 30sec to get into FG range. Probably wouldn't have even tried. Ark would have not been able to run the last play of the game with good clock management. There was 27sec left. If UGA doesn't take the timeout, time would have expired. Then, the play call results in a 10yd putting Ark 10yds closer becuase you back Butler up 10yds.

I have always been a CMR backer. He has always had my full support. The offensive play calling and usage of timeouts is really making me question where he is right now as a coach. I think he needs to take over. He is going to lose his job if he doesn't and I would hate to see that.

Anyways, I look for the Dawgs coaching staff to learn from their mistakes. Dawgs beat MSU this weekend, and get it rolling for the second half of the season.

GO DAWGS.

yankeedawg1, one of if not the best back and forth that I have witnessed on this board, happened this past weekend. Several members here had an extended conversation about AJ and the effects his talent does or does not have on UGA football.

One of my major concerns so far this year is a connection that I know exists between OC and AM. Florida wanted, no not wanted, drooled on themselves trying to get OC and AM. That is a fact. (not sure about the drooling) . . . OC could play WR, believe it or not and it is surprising to me that he is not being utilized.

AJ will change a lot of things when he returns next week. One of them is going to be OC catching a lot of balls, and he is a handful to bring down. Not the slowest athlete on the field either. The perfect tight end for the spread.

Really need for the offensive coaching staff to review the film from last week as wlayton brought attention to and make some changes, not put their collective heads in the sand . . . . when AM is in the gun, the game changes. Will say this also, with AJ not playing, if AM had been in the gun, there would have been a difference. Not saying we would have won, but with him taking the long snap, he had more options open to him that could have changed the game a bit.

A quote from Urban sticks in my craw still . . . . but it is appearing that he is right. Speaks of tremendous athletes going to Athens and not progressing. This is going to be a sad place if we don't pick up the pace. Good place to start is Miss State.
