Another little tid-bit that makes me happy. The player below is probably not known as widely as say, the 4 and 5 star athletes. I know this however, Coach Grantham is aware of who he is and wants this young man wearing the Red and Black. Probably some have read the article below, for those that haven't . . . .

Georgia has landed a commitment from its first defensive lineman for its 2011 recruiting class.

Chris Mayes from Spalding High School in Griffin told Georgia coaches of his decision on Saturday, he told both Scout.com and Rivals.com

Mayes picked the Bulldogs over Miami, Louisville and Oklahoma State.

The 6-foot-5, 300-pound Mayes could end up playing one of Georgia’s end positions or at nose, Spalding coach Clint Ashmore told me this afternoon.

Ashmore had not talked to Mayes since the decision, but has talked to Bulldogs defensive coordinator Todd Grantham about how Mayes would fit in Georgia’s 3-4 scheme.

“I think a lot of what they like is he’s got all the measurables and not an ounce of fat on the kid,” Ashmore said. “He’s put together really well. This is only his second year of football so you’ve got a lot left in terms of the learning curve. He’s a guy you can take and still do a lot with and mold.”

Mayes is rated a three-star prospect and the nation’s No. 45 defensive tackle by Scout.com.

He becomes the 16th commitment for Georgia and 12th from within the state.

The pundits........

There are many that aren't ranking us and the AP just came out and we are #23 while GT is #16......go figure.

No respect. We have all talked about that the last few years. We have all talked about ALL the talent we have and have HAD at UGA. We all are excited this year and question HOW and WHY these guys are ranking us so low etc.

Here's THE reason I believe why......

I love CMR just as much as everyone and do NOT want him to ever leave, mainly because I believe he's a great coach but a better MAN that deserves my utmost respect. All that being said though, there are so called "experts" on college football that don't think he's that great of a HC. There is a perception of just THAT among the media pundits about CMR and his HCing abilities. I think they ALL know the talent is and has been in Athens (just look at NFL drafts the last 9 or so years) but they just will NOT give CMR the credit he deserves as a saavy, get it done HC.

Unfortunately, I believe we will have this "hanging over our heads" EVERY year until he wins a National Championship.

That's my take based on hearing one media guy ACTUALLY say it time and time again........as a matter of fact, every time CMR's name comes up.

TICKS me off every time.

For what it is worth, think that CTG coming in, Belin, also known to raise his voice and Lakatos, figure the same for him.

There is just something about this group of (coaches/teachers) that I have not seen in Athens for a long time.

VanGorder and Erk were two pretty tough coaches. The results of their work showed in their players, game days then were special for the defensive minded at UGA.

After watching Coach Grantham during the spring and now . . . . definitely believes in facing the player or players and getting his point/points across. Reminds me a great deal of Coach Saban. Think that a lot of that is beginning to catch on with Coach Bobo, and . . . . Coach Richt.

Can understand the reasoning. These players are not with the team for 4 years anymore. They have to get it right now, and it appears our new hires understand this.

Back in the day we had the Bullpups, so much has changed on the learning curve.

Picked up on a quote from "Bean". He said that his biggest problem with the offensive side of the ball was . . . the playbook. He said that the other side of the ball comes a lot easier. I like it when a player stands tall and tells it like it is. "Bean" is going to have a super year I feel on the defensive side of the ball.

As mentioned, check the number of players that go to the NFL, UGA has done well. Saw a piece on television this past week and it was about what states most of the top ranked football players are from. Believe it went like this . . . Florida, Texas, California then Georgia. The next comment was made on the subject and the panel agreed that UGA would probably move to number three in the very near future. No small wonder that CTG and CMR believe that keeping the football talent in Georgia takes us up close or to the National Championship as wlayton mentioned. This group of coaches are not playing for second place and I like it.

Richt is a good coach.

I have been one to criticize because I fashion myself a little closer to the Erk Russell style of leadership than the Tony Dungy style but from 2001 to 2005 we won 2 SEC titles in 5 years.

And this was before the SEC winner was an automatic in the BCS Title game. If we win the conference we are in the mix for the national title. We cannot control who goes undefeated. In 2002 we were unfortunate to be behind two undefeated teams. Florida has been lucky in that regard.

All that said our defense started the arm tackling, Teddy Ruxpin hug it out style defense in 2005. Something else was new in 2005 but I cannot remember what it was.

From 2005 on we won some games with brilliant talent but sometimes despite the Ghandi coaching of the defense.

With that deficiency addressed I think good things are ahead. Win the conference and good things happen.
