This and That . . . .NO EXCUSES!!

14 years 6 months ago #30040 by Buc
Think maybe there is some hitting going on in Athens? Read this quote from Coach Richt after the Saturday morning practice.

And some talk of the secondary. Richt described it as some secondary guys with a linebacker’s mentality. “I like the secondary. I like what I’m seeing,” Richt said. “I think we have some quality depth. I think we have some quality starters. And we’re still not sure who’s gonna start there.”

Being on this site for a while now, the above quote brings to my mind wlayton. On occasion and at appropriate times he mentions Greg Blue and others in the secondary that would knock your you know what in the dirt.

Several folks on this blog have made mention of Coach Lakatos. The above CMR quote reinforces my belief in the selections (DEFENSE) that were made after the awful year that we pulled ourselves through. Five losses, unacceptable. (Will never accept the flag in the end zone AGAINST UGA and FOR LSU). One of, if not the worst call I have seen in 60 or 70 years of watching this game.

I have reason to believe that Coach Belin has his part of the bargain accounted for. Some say 1, 2 years away. That is the smart and accepted way to judge this team after the season that all of us suffered through. Can't say that I can go along with that. Too many athletes still on campus, athletes that are very important to any football team. Athletes that NEEDED GUIDANCE AND NOW HAVE QUALITY COACHES. Kick in the corner, my butt . . . . Tech got away with that one, FOR SURE. Forgive me for shouting . . . .

Points to be made . . .

Experienced SEC offensive line, Coach Richt stating that he likes the secondary, apparently more than a little bit.

Best punter in the nation. Best kicker or . . . in the top 1, 2 or 3 in the nation. Running back tandem that is looking forward to this year, and some seem to think that this could be a major asset. (I do.)

The change that has most of us talking about or wondering is . . . the defense. Will they be able to compete. Some say yes, but they also say, it will take several games for the defense to reach the level that they understand what and where they should be. Don't buy it for a second. 3/4 . . . 4/3. All of you know, just as I do . . . . it is nothing more than TACKLING ON DEFENSE, AND BLOCKING ON OFFENSE. Yes I understand 1 gap, 2 gap, I also understand best man wins. BEST MAN WINS.

Sometimes I think that the game of 'American Football' is blown out of proportion. My reasoning is this . . . . there is one football. You play your position and good or bad things happen when the ball is snapped. If you are a receiver and the ball is thrown perfectly and you make the catch . . . . touchdown. What went into that play? The QB threw a beautiful pass, receiver beat the DB . . . . touchdown. What about the other 9 players on offense? I will always love the "Big Nasties" on both sides of the ball.

I stop with this . . . . some don't rank us in the top 25. Some have us in the top 25. If this UGA FOOTBALL TEAM (2010) IS LEGIT . . . . THEY WILL DECIDE, NOT THE PUNDITS. If anyone believes that we have to have a 350 pound nose, and a 2 or 3 year experienced QB to make a run . . . . Alabama lost most of their defense to the pros, UF lost TT to the pros . . . where does that leave us . . . just asking . . .

Well said, Buc. Not much to add, other than--

I AM STANDING THE "F" BY!!!!!

Regardless of our record at the end of the season, I truly believe we are going to see the most exciting, hard-nosed, hard-hitting, in your face brand of football we've witnessed in Athens in years. The players believe in this system, and in their coaches, and I am positive they are going to give 100% every minute of every game. We may not win 'em all, but we aren't going to "lose" any of 'em. By that I mean these guys are going to leave it all on the field, and not give any games away any more. When this bunch takes an "L", it will be because the other team was better, not just becuase our guys didn't feel like leaving it all on the table, as we have seen in recent years.

GO DAWGS, AND STAND THE "F" BY!!!!!!!

The SMART era CONTINUES!!!!!!

Yo Buc

I'm with you - this will be an interesting season

Read on SI this week when they posted their rankings - the guy said he had not ranked uga in the previous rankings - then as he went thru the process of choosing players to watch for the upcoming year - all of a sudden he realized - gosh - look at all these uga players that are on my watch list - now he has them ranked - not high - but that's ok - gets to your point - we've got a lot of talent - just depends on how they all come together and play

The LSU call - YES - the worst call EVER - the fact that the guy over them agrees that it was a bad call does not erase the game - think it just somehow killed our desire to win - we did not have someone to pull our guys out of that feeling - I think we do now - CTG & company

As for HITTING - YOU hit the nail on the head - I've been worried a little bit that we might have some injury's from all this hard hitting - sounds like we've only had a few minor ones so far - hope it stays that way - But I think that these guys are so ready to HIT somebody besides their own team mates - I'm beginning to get a little worried for those Cajuns - when these dawgs get turned loose on an opponent that they can really HIT - OMG - you better watch out

I’m glad we have a soft team to start with - will give them a chance to get in the groove and give the coaches what he needs to begin to make them better and better - and CTG will take this game and get them ready for those chickens in week 2 - that game will set the tone for the year - will tell us if we’re for real now or another year away

GO DAWGS

Were we talking about HITTING - sadlerdawg said it - hard-nosed hard-hitting in your face

Just read this on ugasports - sorry it's a bit long but just couldn't ressist - if they play like this - hope we have a lot of stretchers on the sideline

The following question was posed to both Nick Williams and Jakar Hamilton. Of the two safeties, which player delivers the hardest lick on the field?

Not surprising their answers revealed contradictory beliefs.

"I think Nick hits a little harder than I do," Hamilton said. "We both bring it, but I weigh 205 and he weighs 225. It all depends on what type of situation it is. We both hit great, but (Bacarri) Rambo will hit you, too. We've even got corners who will hit you now, D.O. (Derek Owen), (Vance) Cuff, (Brandon) Boykin will hit you. Sanders (Commings) weighs 215 and he could be playing safety. It's all even; it just depends on the situation."
Williams offered a different take.

"Oh no, it's probably him, although we both want to hit you hard. It's hard to judge," Williams said. "He'll hit you hard and I try to hit you hard, too."
Whichever side you chose, from all indications, Georgia could have its most physical group of safeties in a number of years.
Head coach Mark Richt likes what he sees.

"They (safeties) have a chance to be very physical," Richt said. "There's a lot of linebacker mentality in that group as far as hitting, but they've still got to be disciplined to play the back end, you know? But they've got the chance to be very physical right now."

Do the names Thomas Davis and Greg Blue ring a bell?
With Williams they certainly do.

"That's exactly what I want to be. We want to bring that defense back to Georgia. I want to bring that Greg Blue and Thomas Davis back," Williams said. "I'd give anything to get back to that time, have people saying 'We've got two more Greg Blues back there with Nick Williams and Jakar.' We talk about that all the time."
Williams knows it's also important to play smart.

"All safeties want those big hits - legal bone-crushing hits, game-changing licks. That's what ever safety looks for and I'd be lying if I said I didn't," he said. "But you can't let that overpower you because at times you'll be looking for the big hit and miss the simple play or get too caught up in making a big hit and miss an assignment. That's one thing I've had to learn since moving from linebacker to safety, just let the plays come to me."
Hamilton may have the most to live up to

With a nickname like "Hitman", Hamilton earned a reputation at Georgia Military College for laying out ferocious licks on unsuspecting ball carriers.

"It started after my freshman year at GMC," Hamilton explained. "There was a hit on my highlight film when we were playing Troy JV and I hit a running back, almost hit him back in the stands. Everybody called me Hitman since then."

According to secondary coach Scott Lakatos, both players are splitting the reps with the first unit at strong safety.

"We both competing and at the end of the day it's going to be a good rotation, no matter who starts. We're all going to get the same amount of reps," Hamilton said. "We're just both out there competing. We know one of us will get the start, but at the end of the day we're going t get the same amount of reps."

Williams joked the two will sit down and do a "hit count" at season's end.

"Yeah, we'll probably get together one day and say let's have a little 'hit-off,'" Williams said. "I've got so much learning to do. Hitting just comes with the territory but I've got so much learning to do. I like football, and I'm going to hit you hard.

RabunDog, had not seen that article. Really jacks this old fart up reading what two young "studs" think about this "team" and those that came before them.

This is truly, truly a different attitude than the one that our team had last season. These young men pulling for each other, not finger pointing . . . . . again, says something special is going on with these "Rookie UGA Coaches" and the players they have under their collective wings.

sadlerdawg, won't be long now . . . .
