Special Teams Coordinator???

An excerpt from Marc Weiszer's blog from an interview with coach Grantham for the Athens Banner Herald:

--On the final hire for the defensive staff: “It’s not etched in stone right now, but it’s probably going to be a linebacker coach. Not etched in stone, but that’s kind of the direction we’re headed right now.”

Grantham will coach one of the linebacker positions, but said he doesn’t care if he coaches inside or outside linebackers

On the timeline, he said “We’re very flexible. It could be soon. It could be late. I think as Mark (Richt) and I talk over the next few weeks, we’re going to get the right guy in here so we can have a solid staff from a teaching standpoint.”

I don't think it's a matter of money. I think there's a limit to how many coaches you can have on the staff. I'm not positive about that though.

Just look at what Frank Beamer has done with his special teams. Coach Richt needs to take that on and get it done.

Throw UM of Florida in that example. Agree, CMR could do the job.

There is a limit to the number of coaches one team can hire. No need to waste that on a special teams coach; as was stated earlier, we're great in all aspects of special teams but one: kickoff coverage. We have the best kicker in the nation (Lou Groza voters be damned), but we can't seem to get anyone down there to cover kicks. Think that'll change this year, esp after the LSU debacle...

I have been a proponent on here about having a coach that can be focused on special teams, but am embracing the thought of CMR spending more time in that area next season too.

Our focus needs to be on the defensive side for coaching hires and if CMR will not be calling plays anytime soon he could focus and shore up the voids in ST.

No one better than the HC IMO. Like Buc said, UM did well in making this a focus on his squad. He also put alot of his best players and athletes on ST. Something else to consider doing more.
