Underclassmen Draft List

Sadlerdawg, your MOM is right. George Rogers at South Carolina got the Heismann the year Hershel was a freshman. ONLY because Hershel was a freshman. I'm still bitter about that.

Herschel's story goes long before college. I played high school football in the state of Georgia the same years he did. He was the standard for high school athletes then also. He was putting up numbers in a single game others were taking entire years to get. His training habits out in the fields were legendary. Then we sat and watched him blossom in the national spotlight at Georgia.
He was a very humble player at Georgia and all he wanted to please was his coaches and fellow players, and continually played under constant distractions with people always approaching him with offers of money and other things.
Golferdawg, he also gave a memorable performance in the Sugar Bowl against ND for the NC after dislocating his shoulder on the second or third play of the game. 150 or so yards and two TD's if I recall. How many players would, or could, do that in todays game.
He excited us with numerous plays of running over, through, or around anyone who got in his way.... and noone could go over the top like he could on the goal line. What a joy to watch!!! Greatest college player withouta doubt!

A good friend of mine told me a story about Herschel winning a HS track meet by HIMSELF. My friend was a sales rep covering an area in Ga near the meet and was invited by a friend of his to come see Herschel Walker. Who? he asked. The guy just said, if you have some time COME SEE THIS KID!!!. So he went. The 2 of them stood where the buses drove up and waited to see HW get off the bus. My friend kept asking...is this him?...no. Is this guy him?...no. Finally the guy said, you will know him when you see him. Sure enough, out comes Herschel, barely getting through the door of the bus and looked like a \"Greek God\", totally ripped like he was made of stone....he said he was unbelievable.

Well, the evnts of the track meet went something like this (based on my memory).

Herschel won the 100 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters, 4x100 relay, 4x400 relay, the shot put, the discus and the broad jump. He won the whole event for his school. They said the track officials had to hold up events for him while he was finishing his last event......My friends.....THAT IS ONE AWESOME ATHLETE!!


Oh...he may have won the high jump too, don't remember if my friend included it or not.
