Larry is the best, ever. There has never been one better, and I daresay never will be. No one who ever called a game in college football had the passion, the utter joy that Larry had. Beneath the grizzled voice and the almost comic level of pessimism he displayed (I remember him bemoaning having a touchdown called back against Tech back in 2002 as late as the third quarter. We won that game 51-7.), Larry took great joy in great plays and in a Bulldog win.
While there have been great games called -- 1982 Auburn, 1980 Florida, etc. -- Larry perhaps never came alive quite as much as he did in 2006 against Georgia Tech. The final drive of that game is my personal gold standard in terms of how you call a college game for radio. From his disbelief at good fortune (\"Stafford's completed a couple of passes in a row!\") to his utter disappointment and outright annoyance when Scott Howard points out Danny Ware limping off the field (\"Yeah, I saw it!\") to the complete childlike joy when Stafford connected with MoMass (\"Touchdown! Touchdown, touchdown, my god a touchdown! Massaquoi!\") to his near-death experience after calling the drive (\"Hey, Scott? Who do we sue if we have a stroke?\") to his hyperbole at Oliver's seeming injury after he was gang-tackled by the Dawgs after the final interception (\"We haven't got enough players if we lose him!\") to his prediction of a massive student disappearance (\"There are thousands, literally thousands of boys and girls who will not get home tonight.\") to his lauding of Matthew Stafford's sudden upward status in the eyes of Georgia ladies (\"I wonder how many dates Stafford could have if he walked downtown right now?\"), 2006 Tech was the perfect game for Larry. That final drive -- being behind all night, driving down the field, scoring a touchdown, mistimed penalties, a final interception, all against our most hated rival to get the one win Larry always wants more than any other every season -- was the perfect storm for him, and he shone brilliantly.
We love you, Larry. I love you, and I'll miss the piece of my childhood you bit off and made your own. Thanks for hunkering down for the past 44 years.
