Munson retires

Larry was an icon, irreplaceable and sure to be part of the Dawg Nation legend and lore. There are too many calls to point out a favorite. Pretty much any game Larry was calling was worth listening to. It's a sad day for us, to be sure.

"The freedom of individuals to verbally to oppose or to challenge police actions without thereby risking arrest is one of the principal characteristics by which we distinguish a free nation from a police state."

The timing of this is actually pretty cool. Remember that the Alabama game last year was Larry's first since Clemson 1990 away from the microphone, and Scott Howard came away admirably. I seem to remember these calls from last year vividly:

\"TOUCHDOWN!!!! One and done, baby!\" from Alabama (Dawgs win, 26-23 in OT)

\"Massaquoi 50, 45, 40, so long, everybody! Touchdown!\" from Florida (Dawgs win, 42-30)

And let's not forget his observation from the 2006 Tech game.

Larry: I don't know what time it is, I just know that we're never gonna get home.
Scott: Yeah, who cares? Time stands still when you beat Georgia Tech!

And those are just the ones I remember, without a website like larrymunson.com to replay them for me. Scott has been training at the feet of the master for some years now, and I think that radio broadcasts are in good and capable hands. Even Eric Zeier (whose performance against Alabama last year was atrocious) has gotten leaps and bounds better. Against Florida last year he observed \"Florida fans sneaking towards the exits as fast as their slithery little bodies can carry them.\"

We'll hurt for a while, but we'll be okay.

Thanks, Larry.
