Keeping Cousin Eddie is a huge mistake on FU's part, but one I'll gladly take.
This move to get rid of 3rd & Grantham is just shuffling chairs on the deck of the Titanic. When you have an athletic director that gets involved and forces you to make staff changes, that bond of trust is shattered between the coach and the University and it never gets put back together. Its just a matter of time. Regardless of whether dan gets fired this season or next season, no quality DC is going to come play for a lame duck head coach. Its just not going to happen.
Further, Mullen is a piece of crap who did this to save his own arse - all the while in his Monday presser taking pot shots at the University for their lack of facilities. We all know what Grantham is about. He doesn't build horrific defenses, he builds overcomplicated defenses on his 3-4 scheme that his players can't understand. Blaming Grantham was the easy way out. Grantham is not the reason that Florida is a dumpster fire. Mullen is.
FU's defense is #4 in the SEC. The real problem lies with Mullen. Mullen simply doesn't recruit as he should, and there's positively no allure for 4 and 5 stars to come to Trailerparkville because Mullen hasn't created one in his time there.
Stricklin should have fired Mullen and the entire staff. The time is right. Mullen clearly doesn't want to be there. It's as clear as the sun in the summer sky. Mullen, looking out for #1, renegotiated his contract in the offseason after he hinted at an NFL exit, but hung his assistants out to dry. All of their contracts expire after this season - so FU wouldn't have to buy out the assistants if they make a change. I think it's still highly probable that either Mullen resigns at the season's end and heads to the NFL as a coordinator or he gets fired at season's end when FU realizes there's no resuscitating the corpse that is the FU program.
