Interesting ---- Think So ---- Called Knowledge

8 years 9 months ago - 8 years 9 months ago #72982 by Buc
Find it to be more than interesting that the "new group of talking heads" are all over "offensive linemen".

One site stands true and that is Dawgs.com.

Back in the day, bringing up the past ? years, you put the number on the years, I would place that number at 15. Some refer to that as "knowledge" . . . . truly understanding the game.

This site was all over "offensive linemen". Not everyone, there were some that still liked to fall into what was "passed along".

Running backs mean a lot, as do quarterbacks, as do offensive linemen, as do defensive linemen, as do linebackers, as do defensive backs.

Takes me to this . . . . Head Coach says that he has a problem . . . Kicking and punting game . . . . anyone that reads this thread . . . . ever read that posted here? Really? Mentioned on Dawgs.com? SEC f'ing football is and has been based on a knowledge of punting and kicking the football. Been that way before many on this and other boards were born. Nothing has changed, and Head Coach Kirby Smart understands.

So damn much to be said, and nothing is being said.

yd1, for sure Kirby Smart understands the necessity to have a strong kicking/punting game.

Not only concerned with offensive linemen, has his mind on a critical part of many or most football games . . . . Special Teams of which kicking/punting is one part. Sorry but the lack of attention being paid to our Special Teams over many years goes past recruiting a young man that can walk on campus and be all that. Strong legs in high school are one thing, converting to the tactical game in college is much different, worlds apart.

Can't say how much better I feel about Kirby Smart moving back into Columbus, Georgia. That was a huge mistake by the previous group. The basis for dropping out of Columbus made absolutely no sense. Another area that does not get a lot of attention from the cub reporters, not click inspiring. Kirby Smart and Dell McGee will change that. Fact.

Change is happening in Athens. How long will it take, don't have a clue. I feel good when I see changes being made that make sense. Previous head coach said he was going to start coaching again at the "U". Being a "front man" in Athens cost him his job. Might be he learned a lesson. That statement is not piling on in my opinion, just points to the facts as they were presented for too long.

More smarts

One thing most here at dawgs.com do is look "past the numbers". This is why we looked at 9-3 and saw a lot more issues than others who looked at that same 9-3
and praised what we had accomplished.

One high point of last years team was our secondary. On first glance it appears
that we had one of the top units in the country.

Here however is some reality that CKS dropped on us about our secondary and those "stats" we put up:

www.dawgnation.com/football/smart-georgi...-protected-secondary

Read it for yourself, but the highlights are...

The best pass offense we faced all season was Alabama's, which ranked 62nd in the nation.

We faced 5 teams who had worse passing offenses than we did, which by the way
wasn't good enough to crack the top 100.

Outside of those 5 with worse passing offenses than our terrible ranking was Southern, a FCS school.

Hey you've got to hand it to CKS. He is looking "past the numbers" and not sugar-coating anything. He's coming in and laying down some honest and accurate assessments.

Now don't get me wrong... we can't penalize the team and their results because of who was on the schedule. I am not trying to do that at all. Our pass D for the most part dominated the teams that lined up against them and that is all we can ask. There is talent back there.

What this speaks to however is something else that many here have spoken to over the years; COMPLACENCY.

Despite our achievements and results with this area of the team, CKS has come in
and said let's not toot our horn too much here... we can get better in this area and we have to get better if we ever want to take that next step.

I don't see any complacency here with this staff.... no resting on any laurels of yesterday (or a decade ago as the case may be).

Pure X's and O's aside, this is what this program needed. Wash away this satisfaction with just being "good"; Always think there is a need to improve.

Stop patting yourself for all the things you think you did right yesterday, and instead choose to wake up and think about how you can do them better today and tomorrow.

God Bless and Go Dawgs

Wartdawg, you have been on target from your first post on Dawgs.com and continue to do so.

Great choice of a word . . . . COMPLACENCY.

That is how the "work order sheet" has been handled for many years.

I still chuckle when I think about McGarity's words and his thoughts on his return from Atlanta.

Would love to see McGarity's list of potential replacements for Mark Richt. Interviews included. Hog wash.

Yes I still keep my eyes on the Athletic Director. Impresses me not. Mahogany Row's choosing him was simply a continuing "lack of effort" by those that thought you and I would remain COMPLACENT.

There is a new world in college football that does away with much of the COMPLACENCY. That by name is the INTERNET.

Good post sir . . . . Lots to digest.

Seems there is chatter about whether or not Greg Pyke could move to the left tackle position.

Coach Sam Pittman will make that decision.

Looking at our existing offensive line, would still like to see Pyke remain at right guard. He has put the time in, is an excellent athlete, fits the body type that Coach Pittman wants on his front . . . . size and talent. Pyke will definitely play in the NFL.

Believe when Pyke moves to the NFL, more than likely we will see players like Ben Cleveland either at guard or on the right side. From where I sit, Cleveland reminds me a lot of Theus. That is not a come down. If we are going to play a pro style offense, there has to be an upgrade in talent on the left side.

Isaiah Wynn is an absolute "bad ass". Talented, does not have a 330 pound body, but his "attitude" and "athleticism" is off the boards. What little I can gather, practice sessions in 2015, players knew what facing off with Wynn meant. Nuff said.

Have always wondered what the holdup was with Dyshon Sims. Conversation with a close friend takes me back to understanding that the last group of coaches fell short when Coach Will Friend departed. There was a reason for Will Friend moving to Colorado with Mike Bobo. The handwriting was on the wall. Played out soon after the Belk Bowl.

This has been related to me in conversation.

Kirby Smart wanted to replace not retain coaches in Athens. Kirby has done that, and . . . . he is far from finished on the coaching side of UGA football.

Believe this . . . . Nothing escapes Head Coach Kirby Smart. Every coach "hire" understands that Smart is in Athens for one reason. Hand picked, not "suggested replacements".

A "real head coach" . . . . finally.
