Yes, there was a time, very early in Marks career, when we beat many teams with great regularity. I was sitting in Section 107 for the game you posted....it was an awesome evening in Athens and our future looked bright,..............then,...........not so much!

This topic has been often discussed. That was 2004 and the "toddler" coaching years for both Mark and Nick. Which one grew up to be heads and shoulders above the other? I don't pretend to know all the reasons why Nick excelled and Mark didn't. Certainly both possessed the fundamentals at the inception of their careers. Nonetheless, the facts and the historical record speaks for itself.

It's now Kirby's turn. I'm hopeful that he will resurrect much of the greatness our program had during Marks early years.....and then eclipse them. Time will write Kirby's journal entries and I consider myself an avid reader.

As for Mark, his journal is already filled with conflicting chapters, waffling ambitions, questionable decision-making and suspect leadership....Perhaps he has now found a niche' of followers and a fan base in the tens of hundreds that will accept him for him. I hear the weather is nice in Miami!!

Moving on,..........

If Kirby can recruit more blue chippers the wins will come. I think uga was 30/10 in conf regular season play the last five years. Be interesting to see how the new guys do in comparison.

Buc, if you have an opinion of the new hurricane staff I would be interested in hearing.

Scooby, I spend quite a bit of time keeping up with South Florida football. Right now it is all about being excited. The "U" hired a big name head coach. Much like NC_Dawg said earlier about Richt, many here were excited about the hire, that includes me for sure. Miami coming off of many down years, the conversation is "what do we have to lose". I remember that attitude when Mark Richt was hired by VD.

I believe that Richt got too comfortable. Put it this way, hard not to be comfortable making millions and "coaching" mediocre at best.

Thomas Brown is going to continue to do things that Mark Richt was credited with . . . . recruiting. Mark Richt did what was demanded contract wise. Extra effort did not show itself for the past several years. Richt and grantham wanted and in most cases got their way . . . . recruits travel to Athens and meet with them. Back to Thomas Brown works, will pay off for him in the not too distant future. Thomas Brown has his eyes on a larger target than coordinator. I am willing to bet that, there is conversation.

Call this a trade off . . . . We got James Coley and he is a dynamic recruiter. Knows his way around South Florida well. Has built a serious following in the high schools. Super offensive mind, receivers signing on with the Red and Black will benefit greatly under Coley's leadership and talent.

Red tie, like that. Coley understands. :)

Too much talent in South Florida not to have some "roots" in the area. James Coley has "roots".

One of the things that always struck me as a red herring argument is that if the former regime was crap canned, that we'd somehow lose out of FL recruiting. Florida is a fertile recruiting ground, one of the very best there is. But to act as if Florida players don't eyeball SEC schools is just complete nonsense - regardless of who the head coach is. There are no shortage of "G" stickers on cars and trucks in the State of Florida. When I was in high school, of course FSU/UF/UM were recruiting players hard, but it was commonplace to know that scouts from Georgia, Alabama, LSU, and Tennessee were in town scouting talent.

The idea that because we lost a head coach, somehow the "curb appeal" of playing for Georgia would go with him is absolutely idiocy.

While I do think that adding Coley is excellent and was a very tactical move on Kirby's part, let UGA have a little real success under Kirby and then watch and see what the recruiting classes look like. There are some items in life that just sell themselves. Florida athletes have a smorgasbord of choices as to what school they choose to play for, and I hate to be the one to state the obvious, but MR is going to have a much more challenging road to hoe in bringing in those same recruiting classes at "the U" than he did at UGA.

Someone back home asked me the other day what I expect to see out of "the U," and my response was "much of the same, except with a lot less scrutiny."

In short, gauging by this recruiting class and what Kirby was able to achieve, I am more than relaxed about the future recruits we're going to see.

Richt was an incompetent game day coach. Add that to his poor hiring choices and you get the years of mediocrity. Smart may or may not be better but it is difficult to see him being worse. 2004 was about the peak of Richts accomplishments. Good coaches like BVG could cover some of Richts ineptness and his poor hiring decisions had not taken hold yet.
