Ok, I'll write one . . .
Dear University of Georgia,
I attended UGA from 1980 through 1986 and got two degrees while I was there. I currently make a 5 figure salary, amazingly still in my original field of study. Not many students who attended school with me can say the same thing.
The head coach at the University of Georgia makes $4,000,000 PER YEAR. At my current rate of pay, it would take me more than 60 years to make what Richt makes in a SINGLE YEAR. And if my output looked anything like HIS output, I would be in an unemployment line.
We have a defensive coordinator who is currently making $1,300,000 per year. At my current pay rate, it would take me about 20 years to make what Mr. Pruitt makes in a SINGLE YEAR.
We have an offensive coordinator (who hasn't managed to get us into the endzone in the last 2 weeks) who makes $950,000 per year. At my current pay rate, it would take me nearly 15 years to make what he will make in his first year at UGA.
I know what you are thinking . . . you think "they all have very high risk jobs that could cause them to possibly be out of their jobs any year". Or you're thinking "these coaches are putting people in their seats at Sanford Stadium every weekend and therefore are bringing in more money than we pay them annually". I'm sure it's something like that. Simple supply and demand economics, right?
Wrong. I maintain that not ONE COACH in UGA history has "put people in their seats at Sanford Stadium". It's not the coaches. It's the red jerseys and the red hats with the "G" on the sides that do that. You could get literally any coach on earth and you would still have standing room only at Sanford Stadium.
Pay needs to be about PERFORMANCE. A $4 million per YEAR pay rate should REQUIRE more than a mere 70% success rate. It should REQUIRE CHAMPIONSHIPS. Period. Second place finishes (which we haven't enjoyed in the SEC since the end of the 2012 season) are NOT GOOD ENOUGH. And we won't even enjoy second place in our DIVISION this year!
I don't want to hear some sob story about how the competition is so tough and how the university has limited resources. My daughter is a sophomore at UGA, so I KNOW how much money the university is bringing in from tuition alone.
There should be no such thing as "tenure". But the idea of a "tenured" head coach is not just stupid, it's disgusting.
Get rid of the current coaching staff. Not ONE of them can justify their paycheck. NOT ONE.
Sincerely,
thriller
