Sony is ready to do what ever it takes.
Whichever way coach (Brian Schottenheimer) wants to use me, I’m more than happy to play that position,” Michel said. “I’m looking forward to doing different things.”
That’ll require staying healthy, something Michel wasn’t able to do for a large portion of last season and then again this spring. He has dealt with a sprained ankle and has fractured the same scapula (shoulder blade) twice -- once early last season and then again in March.
But two days into preseason camp Michel says that he feels great. He’s up three pounds from his playing weight a year ago and currently tips the scales at 208 pounds.
He also feels as if he and the UGA training staff have identified the problem that led to those two shoulder blade injuries. A simple equipment adjustment was needed. Michel says his old pads left too much of his shoulder exposed. He has been refitted with a new set of pads and will be giving those a go once the NCAA mandated acclimation period has ended and the Bulldogs strap on the pads for the first time Saturday.
hope they fixed it
Assuming he’s able to stay healthy, the former five-star running back isn’t simply interested in helping his team win with the ball in his hands. A year ago he showed an nack for making big plays on special teams in a kick coverage role.
He’s hoping to do that again, too.
“I’m going to work hard so that I can earn a spot on every special teams. Right now I’m on the list. I’m on the depth chart. I’m working my way up,” Michel said. “I’m trying to be a starter in each one of those phases.”
That isn’t to say he wouldn’t like to catch a few kicks. He’s flashed the ability to do that in his freshman campaign as well with a kickoff return for a touchdown in the Belk Bowl against Louisville. It was called back by a penalty.
But he realizes there’s this current teammate with whom his relationship dates back to high school, and he sort of specializes in the return game.
“I’ll try to return kicks but as you know, we’ve got a superhero back there, Isaiah McKenzie,” Michel said with a big smile. “I’m excited. I hope I’m back there. I’m honored to just be able to block for him. If I’m able to block for him, I’ll be excited.”
