2014 Football Thoughts

Another thought on the 2014 Season. Maybe some have read this, if not . . . .

Gene Chizik’s rapid rise and fall at Auburn make him one of if not the brightest shooting star in the history of SEC coaches. Hired in 2009 after a 5-19 record at Iowa State; fired in 2012 after 3-9 season on the Plains. But in between, a pair of 8-5 seasons sandwiched around a 14-0 BCS Championship season. From the valley to the mountain top and back to valley all in five years.

Unfortunately for Chizik, much of the credit for his national title will always be given to quarterback Cam Newton — himself a one-year flash on the SEC scene — and offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn. It was Malzahn who replaced Chizik, of course, and he led the Tigers to a BCS title game of his own last year, before losing to Florida State. Included in AU’s SEC championship run was a shocking, last-play-of-the-game win over arch-rival Alabama at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Speaking on XM/Sirius satellite radio yesterday, Auburn’s last football coach predicted his successor will finish 10-2 in 2014 with a pair of losses. One will come at home to a “loaded” South Carolina team. “I think South Carolina will get them,” Chizik said. The other will come at the hands of Nick Saban and Bama. In such a heated rivalry, picking the Tide over the Tigers is likely to lead to charges of treason being aimed at the ex-Auburn man. But his rationale is sound:

“That’s almost one of those 50/50 deals. If the game was at Auburn, I would pick Auburn.”

Moves me to think about this . . . . Chizik picking South Carolina to beat Auburn along with Alabama doing same. Seems that he thinks Auburn will win in Athens. So, if Auburn gets beaten by a "loaded" South Carolina team, guess he figures South Carolina and Auburn beat Georgia. South Carolina on the road to play Auburn. Hmmmmmm

Has been said on this board that 2014 expectations are high for Georgia, other boards seem to be thinking the same.

Sorry wlayton, I'm not picking on ya, but I had to belly laugh when I read the quoted text!....If I had a nickel for every time I've heard THAT said,.....I'd, well,....have my pockets full of nickels!!!

I'm expecting another 8-4, 9-3 season. Had it not been for some of the more positive "changes" that have occurred since January, I'd be expecting fewer wins. Talent has NEVER been our problem.....EVER!....As for 2015???....Show me da MONEY!!!!

Go Dawgs!!!!

I was simply addressing the "potential" everyone has been talking about from the new hires to the coaching staff and "hopefully" making UGA a contender etc. Most were/are thinking THIS year and my comment was about IF the potential comes to fruition, I didn't think it would happen until 2015 minimum and NOT this year.

Wasn't looking through rose colored glasses while typing, simply making the point of IF....it may take awhile and to not get too excited about THIS year like we tend to do.

I've said many times lately.....SHOW ME.

I have expressed deep concerns over our D secondary and OL. You don't win championships without those two areas being sound.

Again, like last year, the D secondary could be our achilles heal this year. Mason will be good enough for our O to be top 3 in the SEC but my most concern is the secondary and OL.
I don't feel 2014 team is ready for top 4......yet (pray I'm wrong)

I agree. D wins championships and ours may not be ready. No real concern with O as long as HM can manage offense. I remember another QB in David Greene, although he played 4 years, always thought he was an average QB surrounded by some very good talent and stout D.

Right out of the gate we face what I and others believe to be a very good football team, Clemson. The article below goes into great detail. For those that like to look at and maybe draw conclusions, much to be considered.

Not someone just typing and filling copy space.

Much of what I read about Clemson makes me draw comparisons with Georgia in the upcoming season.

Don't believe for a moment that Clemson is a gimme.

"Clemson loses its two most visible stars from last year's Orange Bowl squad, but the Tigers return one of the best defensive lines -- and perhaps the best set of coordinators -- in the country. They are deep and fast and might not need a rebuilding year." You can read more at... www.sbnation.com/college-football/2014/6...view-schedule-roster

Clemson was a teachable moment last year for us. Won't sneak up on us lack of respect for

ACC team won't happen. Home game difference in our favor.
