College Football and Steve Spurrier

Been around print media, internet boards for quite some time. Know that there are those that read and there are those that don't. If you like to read and post one line posts, the following is probably not for you.

On THIS BOARD, I have watched and listened to folks chirp about Steve Spurrier, both pro and con. I have done that often, and now will probably increase the pace. For the most part, folks are not wrapping their arms around the "self appointed" #1 coach in college football. Sooner or later, the truth comes out. If you are into college football, do or don't like Steve Spurrier, take the time to read this article.

This thread will probably get at best, 10 hits. Can not count the number of folks on this board and others that express their feelings toward Steve Spurrier. Folks, college football is in the hands of people that could give a spit less about you and I. You and I. Drive to the stadiums, buy everything that supports our team, comes down to this . . . . They are about THEY. Not trying to be gramatically correct. I do understand that no one is listening, for the most part. You and I are watching college football disappear, it will be a professional sport (recognized as such) in less than five years.

Here is the long and short. The NFL has always been protected by the NCAA. The NCAA has crumbled. Now the power is in the hands of . . . . football conferences and their leaders(?). The folks that are in the know have this figured out. It is going to be simply this . . . . pay for play. Those that have the goods will run college football. Anyone that thinks that those in charge of college football will pay athletes only x number of bucks, you simply don't see what is going on around you.

Last thing. If you believe that college football as you know it will stay the same, or close to what you see now, hoping I am living five years from now and can hear what you have to say.

Don't know how many times I have been on the stump about losing the game that I and many millions have enjoyed over many lifetimes. Check our Constitution out and tell me after reading a portion that alll is ok. In the next two years, anyone reading this post will shake their heads in disgust.

Buc, you probably knew I was going to reply to this one. Good post, about a sad subject. College football IS on its way out.

One of the reasons I started to love college football, and NOT pro football, was because it put MY dinky little home town on the map. Without it, I don't think Athens would get as much attention as Acworth. But there is a move on to professionalize college football, and I think that's sad.

Just this morning I've been reading all of the noise about SI and Yahoo exposing corruption in college football. Anybody notice who they are aiming at? I do - the SEC. But that's another story. ULTIMATELY what these "journalists" are trying to accomplish is the professionalizing and unionizing of college football.

I'm afraid the days of watching your favorite school, regardless of who it is, and being proud of the kids that represent it, are coming to a genuine close. Sure, there are cheaters out there, and there always have been and there always will be. But the fact that two of the identified cheaters are Tennessee and Mississippi State just goes to prove that cheating doesn't guarantee a win. I'll probably come back to comment on this thread some more, Buc. It strikes close to home.

(Ironically, as much as I can't stand Spurrious, he's one of the characters that helps make college football more interesting than pro football. Same for Lane Kiffin - glad he's at USCw. There will always be bad guys in the sport, like Spurrious, Kiffin, Pepper Rogers, Lou Holtz, etc., but Spurrious is out of control. Taking a reporter off his team coverage is an act of nothing but COWARDICE.)

What is happening is depressing. What made the college game what it is, is being taken away. Of that there
is little doubt. Many of us have seen the warning signs for awhile now, and finally more are starting to
open their eyes but the ship has "done set sail" as my grandpa used to say. That's how it always happens...
the little steps in the wrong direction are ignored because they are tiny steps and people tend to look
at them individually as if they existed in a vacuum. They don't however, and all of a sudden you wake up
one day and these little steps have added up to the fact that you're 3/4 of the way down the path you
never wanted to take and it's too late to stop it.

be said by the press... well you have a problem, and that's how programs get out of control.

Agree that was bad analogy, but true. To take it a step further, when a coach controls information coming out of a program it is bad. Just ask Vandy now!

Funny how Spurrier can make off-handed comments and everybody thinks it is funny, That's just the ole ball coach. But when someone questions his actions he gets angry. And to threaten to quit if the reporter is not fired! Extremely disappointed with The State for not standing up to a bully. If the information Morris wrote was slanderous, fire him. Otherwise let him do his job.

It is just a case of the lamecocks having thin skin and boycotting the newspaper because they didn't like what Morris wrote about their coach. That is sad.
