Giving some thought to whether or not SEC teams should play a nine game schedule, or maybe more than that in the future.
Seems that many are worried about losing Georgia Tech if newer schedules prevail. Maybe we can do a review on why Georgia Tech is now in the ACC, not the SEC. Really don’t have to go there, right . . . . Will anyway.
Long and short of Georgia Tech leaving the SEC for the ACC falls in their lap. They are the ones that were asked to stay when they considered leaving. Leave it to the Techies, they like many in this country, have all of the “right” answers and reasons for any movements they make.
Also know that some on this board would be grief stricken if we no longer kicked GT’s butt at the end of the season. All one has to do is look back over the past decade and the results are clearly lopsided. Caliber of play is not the same . . . . Anymore. Hard pill for the Techies to swallow, but . . . . Take two aspirin and sleep on it. Then again, read the BS in the Atlanta papers. They still have one, right?
Once upon a time winning against GT was the one game that I had to have. A loss to the Techies ruined an entire season for me, even if our “three yards and a cloud of dust” had been successful. You folks understand what I am saying . . . Run, run, pass, punt. VD Football. Truth.
There was a time when freshmen at both schools had a football schedule and faced off, prior to moving up to the varsity. Actually enjoyed that, however college rules changed and “B” teams are no longer a place for young men to actually get “game experience” above the high school level.
There is no way that Georgia/Georgia Tech stack up against games like Georgia/Florida in JAX. Georgia/Auburn. Fixing to see sparks between the two again. Circumstances, that is the way I like to phase it. Every year I make myself a mental note on the win and loss column prior to a game being played. Georgia/Georgia Tech is no longer a mystery.
Would I like to see Georgia Tech return to the SEC . . . . Heck yes. Would not have to play some of the weak sisters that should not be playing D1 schools. Hard to turn down a million bucks these days, something close to that, can't blame the teams looking for a payday.
Might make GT “good” again. All any of us have to do is look at the recruiting in the State of Georgia and surrounding states . . . . GT is rapidly falling off of the map when it comes to D1 football. SEC schools come into the State of Georgia and when they leave, 90% of those that came and recruited, left GT wondering why out of state universities have so much success.
Simple actually . . . . GT went to the ACC, looked pretty good for a short time, but that decision was one of the worst miscues any college has ever made when it comes to football. Not smart.
Nick Saban is on record as favoring a nine-game schedule because of the cross-divisional scheduling problems. “Under the current system we have guys who will never play Georgia or Florida,” Saban said last summer. “That’s not right. If we have to play nine conference games to get that fixed then that is what we need to do.”
Mark Richt was asked about the prospects of a nine-game conference slate this week at a Touchdown Club meeting in Athens and the Athens Banner-Herald reports he seemed to think that’s most likely to happen if the conference expands again to 16 teams. If the SEC expands again, Richt said, “I think we would have to go to nine” conference games.
Mark Richt does not need to sit on the fence, step out like Nick Saban, no place to be shuffling ones feet.
The above paragraphs in bold, quoting Saban and Richt, I plucked from Bill King.
Just some thoughts from an old fart that likes to reflect . . . .
