Couple of thoughts on CMR and whether or not he can lead the UGA football team to greater heights.
Think a short time back that question would bring a resounding no to some on this board and others.
Something happened in the last couple of years making folks not so dismissive.
Most would agree there have been several coaching changes that seem to have made our group a better team.
I recognize the fact that we have recently had victories over Florida, reason why, maybe our coaching improved and quite possibly our talent level stepped up under the coaching changes.
Do I think that Jarvis Jones would have attended Georgia had it not been for Mark Richt, nope. Auburn and Florida had their eyes on Jarvis, along with others.
Would Jarvis Jones have been the player under Willie Martinez that he turned out to be under Todd Grantham, don’t think so. Along that same line of thinking, would “Tree” have been the same player under Willie Martinez that listened to Todd Grantham and changed positions, don’t think so.
Anyone that watched Georgia play this year knows that Mark Richt did not call the defensive formations. That was strictly Todd Grantham. How involved he was calling offensive plays, none of us know.
Could be that Mark Richt was forced to get rid of Willie Martinez, don’t know the details, do know that Willie Martinez has made a couple of stops since being asked to leave Athens. Some or all of that falls on Mark Richt. In my opinion Mark Richt was still “soft” in the head coaching area. Friends don’t necessarily know how to coach very good talent, like the talent that has been on the Athens Campus year after year.
It has been said on this board that Mark Richt has shown a different approach to running the football team. He still does not want to get into folks faces, but the Mark Richt that I have seen the past couple of years, and especially this past season, will jump, and jump quickly. Have seen him put Todd Grantham in his place a time or two, nothing wrong with that, some call it leadership. Have witnessed him crawling all over referees, and we know about the 680 clown.
A lot of people that both play and coach football and other sports never reach that final goal. More than one great coach never got there, whether college or professional.
Have noticed that the noise that was surrounding Mike Bobo has fallen an octave or two. Mark Richt from the get go has stood behind Mike, appears that the list of job openings is growing quickly for Mike Bobo’s services. I am one of several on this board that called for Mike’s head, more than once. Having second thoughts now. One thing that I do admire about Bobo, he is willing to say “I messed up”, did that a couple of times recently. I believe that Mike Bobo has arrived, he served his apprenticeship, all of us guided him through that period with our comments on just how bad his play calling was.
If this group of coaches stay together for a while, not only will the system work better, it will also aid in the recruiting area. Stability means more to some than others. Anyone doubt what would have happened with Alabama had Kirby Smart taken the Georgia job? Mark Richt, Mike Bobo and Kirby Smart on the recruiting trail together, hard to fathom.
Say this . . . . Anyone that thinks Mark Richt is going anywhere . . . . You and I need a side wager. Make it easy on yourself.
Know that I will get po’d about some things concerning Georgia Football in the future, probably next season, or before.
How many coaching changes will the Falcons go through before they win a Super Bowl?
Just a couple of thoughts. All of us have the right to our thoughts and what we post for others to see.
As far as the Georgia Bulldogs are concerned, maybe the coming season will tell all of us just how good or bad we are. Schedule is not one to be taken lightly.
