While Vince recovers, I thought I'd be the team historian again for a bit and post here a bit of history on our championship coaches. These are the coaches who won division, conference or national championships for our Georgia Bulldogs football team. It's really quite fantastic. Check it out. And notice the way our current coach stacks up.

They are, in order, H.J. Stegeman, George \"Kid\" Woodruff, Wally Butts, Vince Dooley, and Mark Richt.

Southern Conference champions:
H.J. Stegeman (1920)
Kid Woodruff (1927, split with Tech, who won the head-to-head battle 12-0).

Southeastern Conference Eastern Division Championships:
Mark Richt (3): 2002, 2003, 2005
2003 was a three-way split with Tennessee and Florida. We beat Tennessee head-to-head 41-14 but lost to Florida 13-16.

Southeastern Conference Championships:
Wally Butts (4): 1942, 1946, 1948, 1959
1946 was a split with Tennessee, whom we did not meet head-to-head

Vince Dooley (6): 1966, 1968, 1976, 1980, 1981, 1982
1966 and 1981 were split with Alabama, whom we did not play head-to-head either year
1976 was a split with Kentucky, who we beat head-to-head 31-7

Mark Richt (2): 2002, 2005

National Championships:
Kid Woodruff (1): 1927 (Boand and Poling polls)

Wally Butts (2): 1942 (consensus split with Ohio State)
1946 (Williamson poll), undefeated, untied

Vince Dooley (2): 1968 (Litkenhaus poll)
1980 (consensus), undefeated, untied

Heisman Trophy winners coached:
Wally Butts(1): Frankie Sinkwich, 1942

Vince Dooley(1): Herschel Walker, 1982

You know what I noticed while compiling this information -- and you'll notice it too, if you look -- is that no great Georgia coach has ever tied Georgia Tech. Go ahead, look up and check. I'll wait.

See? Now I know we have a few ties all-time against Tech, but no coach who has ever won any kind of championship for Georgia has EVER tied Georgia Tech. You play that game to WIN, buddy, or you lose your job rather quickly.

AND TO HECK WITH GEORGIA TECH!!!
