What Can Richt Do?

What Can Richt Do? was created by averagedawg
I think most would agree that Mark Richt will be on the sidelines coaching the remainder of the season.
The question being what step(s) can he do to improve this team.
I'm not going to pretend to be an expert. I'm not.
However, I think that if he either fired or demoted Bobo, told everyone he was assuming the OC position and started calling the plays, at the very least maybe the task at hand would give him a kick in the emotional butt.

All I can say is that I wouldn't let my fate rest with the play calling prowess of
Mike Bobo.

I think our biggest issue outside of Bobo and our LB injuries is the fact that our offensive line
is quite.. ya know.. offensive. Unfortunately though, I doubt that is something he can immediately
fix in the middle of a season. You either have the horses or you don't, and I think we fall into
the don't category.

If I were him... I wouldn't let my fate rest with Bobo. As far as the O-line problems go... the best
he can do is run right at the right tackle, especially if he does it a few times during what is
normally considered passing downs. A - With the way people are running around right tackle, Crowell
might be able to run between the RG and RT and find no one home because of the way all the DE's
are rushing on that side. B - At the very least running right at the problem might slow down that outside rush on that side a bit when you really are going to call a pass later in the game.

God Bless and Go Dawgs

I know firing Bobo is the "quick fix" everyone has in mind...heck, even I was ready to run him out on a rail after the Boise game, but it's not Bobo who needs fixing...before everyone starts screaming, let me explain.

Richt came to UGA from Tallahassee as a supposed quarterback whisperer and "offensive guru." He took the knowledge gained from FSU and the style he ran there and used it to tutor/mentor Bobo to the point that he (Richt) felt Bobo was ready to assume play-calling duties based on the fact that he (Bobo) had a solid understanding of his (Richt's) offensive scheme. See where I'm going here? Richt GROOMED Bobo to call the plays that he does and has either a)idly stood by, or b) secretly directed Bobo's playcalling for the last three years. I honestly thought Richt was going to be the Frank Beamer of the SEC, but I'm finally realizing that the offensive woes can't be placed on Bobo alone. As the head coach, the ultimate responsibility HAS to fall on the shoulders of Richt for not making an OC change a long time ago, or not seeing the problem with the playcalling.

If you really look back on his tenure and break it down, Richt inherited some phenomenal talent when he first came to Athens, used that talent to build a solid reputation and has basically under-developed 4 and 5 star talent ever since. For whatever reason, the program has gone stale. When a loaf of bread goes stale, you don't cut off the crust and eat the stale bread. You shake your head at the fact that you wasted a loaf of bread and you go get a new one...hopefully one that won't go stale as quickly. At this point, cutting off the crust (Bobo) won't hack it...it's time to put a new loaf of bread in the pantry.

Agreed.
But he will be on the sidelines this year. Whether we like it or not.
My point is taking over the OC job might shake loose some of the cobwebs in his head.

I hear ya...I just wonder if he'd end up calling the same plays that Bobo would have? If that's the case, all we've done is lost a fairly good recruiter and maybe some confidence from our QB's who Bobo's in charge of coaching now.

I'm just not a huge fan of making a change like that mid-season. Now, if we win out and Richt wants to run Bobo off and give it one more shot as the playcaller himself for next year...I'd be willing to quietly sit back and see how that goes...

The above posts rattled my gray matter and it comes out something like this. Spurrier turned his offensive play calling over to his son (his son) did not work, SS kept throwing the visor to the turf. What did he do . . . . took the job away from blood and is running the offense again. Did not win the SEC Championship last year, he did however get there. Don't really think I need to say much more. Will however . . . .

While Richt was not a starter in college or the pros, he was there and got to back up some fine football players. He spent a lot of time with the clipboard and in the film room. One of the reasons that FSU was so successful, he was doing things that college coaches were not up on.

One thing that Spurrier has made it a point to do is . . . . hire a defensive coach that understands (guess what) defense. BVG left UGA, signed on with Spurrier and left quickly for the Falcons. That did not stop SS, went out and found another specialist. Not crazy about SS, but he no longer is sneaking up on Richt, has beat him two in a row. Lucky or not, the score card is South Carolina 2, UGA 0 in the last two games. Their recruiting will probably pick up leaps and bounds if they again win the East. Florida has to play in Columbia this season.

Lots of talk prior to Grantham being hired at UGA. Think the name mentioned most on this board was Kirby Smart. Saban sat him in a corner and said Kirby when you leave here, don't make a move left or right, move up.

I talk too much. averagedawg, Richt will finish this year. With the schedule and the amount of talent on hand, this group could turn some heads. Might win in spite of coaching, athletes can do that. Bobo and Richt on AM's butt about staying in the pocket, leaves little doubt why we need a serious coaching change.

One more thingy. Don't care how many tight ends we have, better play Rome, and start right now.
