yankeedawg1, your "Blue Plate Special" as always, really good. I did some serious recall last night and early this morning. Put together a piece, just wanted to know if it will be allowable to post it in your thread. Could pp some off. If not, no problem will start another thread. Will wait for your approval. If it causes problems, I will erase it.
Checked back, guess you and Georgia are chasing (Bronco Squirrels) on the back forty. Will post.
Couple of thoughts this morning, takes me back a few years.
Remember VD and his infamous three yards and a cloud of dust. Many have heard those words mentioned, some of us witnessed it. UGA at the time was very fortunate to have a defensive coordinator that in my mind was making UGA proud again. We had fallen into the depths with a couple of choices for head coach prior to VD.
This same scenario seems to be playing itself out again. At least it does in my view. I have monitored this board for some time now, and it reminds me so much of those earlier years. Most of the improvement and high fives seem to lean toward the defensive side of the ball. Granted, Grantham is in only his second year, he has however created that “certain spark” that the defensive coordinator for VD did many years ago.
I will never accept or agree that VD would have remained head coach the length of time that he did, had it not been for his defensive coordinator. Interesting how the folks at Nike and UGA seemed to agree with the RED down the center of the helmets, and the reason for that. Many years later I feel that Erk finally is getting the respect that he should have gotten years ago. Said it before, Erk should have been the head coach at UGA. Take a look at the head coach appointees that VD added after becoming Athletic Director. Both football and basketball. Lots of folks got really upset with the President of UGA for some of his actions against VD. My opinion, should not have been his decision to make, should have been done prior to him taking the lead at UGA.
Richt has slipped the last few years, think I can get approval of most with this statement. Appears to me that he needed to make some changes that did not sit too well with him. Last couple of years the term “hot seat” has hit all of the newspapers, magazines and sports networks. Invariably that term comes up in any “outside” conversations about Richt.
Personally think that Richt had a good ride for a lot of years because he had so much offensive talent. Feel he neglected the defensive side of the ball from the beginning, witnessed by VanGorder leaving and being replaced with Martinez. I have come to the conclusion that Richt coming from FSU, where he was the offensive coordinator, figured that was the way to win, outscore them. Too many folks coming from the NFL and other good programs to play that type of ball. While Grantham still has to prove himself, I think if we believe all we read and hear about the man, it reminds me of a second coming. Full of piss and vinegar Grantham is, Erk had those characteristics.
Maybe it all comes down to this year and the results of our team. Solid defense, solid offense. Going to avoid saying much about Bobo.
Read a piece this morning about a disagreement/difference of opinion between Bobo and another coach on that side of the ball this past practice.*** Will take a hard look at Bobo September 3, in Atlanta. Excuses by Richt or Bobo not accepted if they continue on the path of the past. Only Buck Belue will remain on Bobo’s side and continue to make excuses for him.
Could be wrong about Grantham, will soon find out. There is a huge invisible ex-coach that will be in Atlanta on the sideline. He coached at Grady High School, knows his way around Atlanta and the UGA Red and Black. Finally getting his due, I hope that the players understand how much that RED on their helmets mean to some of us.
Richt know that you won’t read this. Boise State from the WAC comes to Atlanta with 90% or more of the seats occupied by UGA supporters. Come away with the expected results or that same 90% will leave Atlanta with ill feelings, these are the folks that started all of the “hot seat” talk.
Go Dawgs . . . coach’em up.
***Plucked this from Chip Towers of the AJC this morning.
Tailback talk There were conflicting reports after practice Thursday as to how much tailback Richard Samuel was able to participate. Running backs coach Bryan McClendon said the big junior was able to do everything, including 11-on-11 work. Offensive coordinator Mike Bobo insisted he did not have Samuel for 11-on-11.
Not a good time for coaches on the same side of the ball having different thoughts.
