ShareATHENS, Ga. -- Uga VIII, who only became the mascot for the University of Georgia in Octobert 2010, has now been diagnosed with lymphoma, according to the university.

"He is responding well to treatment, and the mascot is expected to continue appearances at athletic events as his health allows," said a news release Friday from UGA.

The 15-month-old mascot, whose register name is "Big Bad Bruce," officially took over for interim bulldog "Russ" before the Vanderbilt game in October. Uga VIII missed the Liberty Bowl with a "gastrointestinal condition." Additional tests revealed a more serious condition.

Uga VIII is being treated at the UGA College of Veterinary Medicine, and his primary caretaker is veterinarian Dr. Bruce Hollett, for whom the bulldog was originally named.

"Russ," who was back on the sideline for the bowl game, will continue to fill in for Uga VIII when needed.

Per the school, Uga VIII is the great-great-great-great-great grandson of the original Uga. The Seiler family of Savannah has provided mascots for UGA sporting events since 1956.

Here's more on this condition from www.caninelymphoma.net ...
-G

"The life expectancy of a dog diagnosed with lymphoma is between 9 and 12 months. While this may seem discouraging, it is possible to send a dog's lymphoma into remission with constant medical care, and regular chemotherapy.

"With proper care, the survival rate of a dog diagnosed with lymphoma can be raised to 50%. With intensive chemotherapy, the average chance of remission is from 60-90%. Without treatment, most dogs will only survive for an average of two months."

Obviously, Uga VIII will have the best care possible, but this is still really tough news.

Man, when it rains it pours, huh?.

I think it's time to look for other breeders. It's obvious these Dawgs are not healthy due to over a century over inbreeeding. Look at UGA VII. Lived only 4 years and now UGA VIII. Providing UGA to the U.G.A is a privilege and comes with a lot of perks. I've got to ask, why does this family get that privilege?

There are many other English Bulldog breeders that can provide a healthy UGA. Where is it set in stone that UGA MUST come from this family line?

Throwing an idea out there for everyone to chew on; why not have a competition between multiple breeders that can establish a healthy line?

Hell, it might even change our luck.
